Paul Lo Duca rips Alex Rodriguez as ‘one of the fakest people out there’

It’s safe to say Paul Lo Duca is not fond of Alex Rodriguez’s rehabilitated image.

The former New York Mets catcher called A-Rod “one of the fakest people” during an interview Monday on the WFAN Sports Radio.

“People know I’m not a fan, and I’m sorry,” said Lo Duca. “Never will be a fan. I just think he’s one of the fakest people out there. ... The way he gets put on a pedestal now is beyond me.”

Lo Duca, now a horse racing analyst, blasted A-Rod when they were discussing Rodriguez’s live Instagram conversation with Mets slugger Pete Alonso over the weekend.

Mr. Lo Duca either wasn’t asked if Mr. Rodriguez’s status as a centaur changes things, or chose to ignore that question…..

I don't have a horse in this race.

Too easy. Pass.

As someone who has never found the centaur/horse jokes worthwhile—actually, I'm not sure any of the site's oft-repeated memes have done anything for me—there was this interview with A-Rod published a year ago. In it:

Q. There’s that rumor about your having a portrait of yourself as a centaur.

A. 100 percent not true. I wish it was true because it’s such a cool story.

Not that I think this will stem the centaur/horse comments.

One thing this article does not mention is Lo Duca dragging J Lo (and her ass) into his A-Rod rant. Bad form, petty, unenlightened, and most of all terribly misogynistic.

This takes it from petty to insane:

A-Rod’s just-as-famous fiancée Jennifer Lopez wasn’t spared for criticism, either.

“By the way, the TV commercials with Fiat,” Lo Duca said. “I’ll never forgive her for Fiat. If J-Lo ever sat with that nice little butt in a Fiat, I’m a 10-foot Indian!”

"I'll never forgive her for Fiat"? What the actual ####?

Why is he talking about her butt?

What the #### is the phrase "I'm a 10-foot Indian"?

It's a euphmism for Option J. And a pretty cocky one at that.

On brand for Paul, then.

Horse racing analyst? That's a thing? Does he, like, write for a horse racing version of Fangraphs? (Or post to HRTF?)

As for ARod, of course I've never met him, but he comes across as weird and awkward. Which is something that you wouldn't fake even if you could.

I was in the Mitchell Report, something I'll never be proud of and something that was a mistake of mine a long time ago," he said. "But I owned up to it. I didn't lie. Owned up to it immediately
It takes a real hero to own up to something after everybody knows about it.

This is the same Paul Lo Duca who used PEDs and cheated on his wife with a 19-year-old. Keepin' it real.

The detail in the Mitchell report still cracks me up. If memory serves me right it said that the Mets believed that LoDuca had used steroids while on the Dodgers, had stopped using steroids, but if traded would likely use them again so as to make the Mets look stupid.

And is now being sued by Joe West for making up a story about bribing him and how often he was ejected.

Lo Duca v West. Go ahead and draw your battle lines, BBTF.

Turns out it wasn't necessary for Lo Duca to resume steroid use to achieve that goal.

Horse racing has always had analysts. The Daily Racing Form may have been what Gutenberg tested his printing press with.

My understanding is that in Lo Duca's case, "horse racing analyst" is kind of a gentlemanly euphemism for "degenerate gambler". Around the same time that the story about him lying to that 19-year-old about being divorced broke into the news, there was also a story about him having huge, unpaid gambling debts.

Not a wholesome trottin' race, no -
But a race where they set down right on the horse!

Settin' on Dan Patch? Make your blood boil!
Well, I should say.

9--He pretends to provide guidance to bettors. He's terrible. Regular complaints when he's on TV that he is either drunk or stoned. Dude will start a sentence, stop, look confused then look at the other guy to pick up the conversation. That is Paul's go to move. Or just look dazed.

Owned up to it immediately

Per Wiki, the Mitchell Report came out in Dec 2007 ... and LoDuca admitted it publicly in Jan 2013. He may have admitted it to investigators of course ... given they had checks from him to Radomski.

If memory serves me right it said that the Mets believed that LoDuca had used steroids while on the Dodgers, had stopped using steroids, but if traded would likely use them again so as to make the Mets look stupid.

Per Wiki it was still the Dodgers, before the trade to the Marlins. They are saying move him before the bubble bursts if you can get fair value back. It's phrased as "If you do trade him, will get back on the stuff and try to show you he can have a good year. That's his makeup. Comes to play." ... which is in line with your memory but more positive. Given the Dodgers got back 2 guys who never made the majors, I'm not sure they cared that much about getting value back but maybe they were reasonable prospects at the time.

Looks like a good hot take to me. Not a great one. Virtually every primate on this site could have made it. And would have, had they managed to be born with a complete lack of humour, and then happened to find the perfect thread in the gift of the year.

His contrarianism was carrying him away from the site's group think, which I guess is why people were fooled into thinking this was a special take. I see nothing remarkable about it.

Personally, I am not even mad, I am just disappointed. But please do consider this an opportunity for dialogue and education.

I think Walt is mixing up the Dodgers' trade of him to the Marlins with the Marlins' subsequent trade to the Mets the following offseason.

That must be it. I remembered the Lo Duca trade was for Penny and Choi. Bill Plaschke was not a fan.
