Pederson, Stripling back to work with Dodgers after no trade

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Joc Pederson was back in a familiar clubhouse. He had the same dressing stall and many of the same teammates.

Not much had changed, except for him.

He felt awkward — and with good reason.

Pederson put his Dodgers uniform back on at Camelback Ranch over the weekend for the start of spring training. Just a week earlier, it looked like he would be performing these February rituals across town in Tempe.

So, do you suppose the two of them will stick around for the whole season, and, if not, when do they leave and where do they go?

Cots currently has them about $10 M over the threshold which they'd clearly like to get below. On the other hand, they've been below for 2 years so the tax on the $10 will be chump change and they might as well see how the season is working out before dumping salary. Still, having seen what the Dodgers were willing to settle for, it's hard to imagine there won't be some teams at the end of spring who will want Stripling and the Dodgers will (kinda) have too many players so whether it's Pederson or somebody else, easy to see another piece moving. But if they start the season with the full crew, they probably won't make a move until the deadline and then only if it couldn't possibly hurt their playoff chances. (Other possibility is that whoever doesn't get playing time starts complaining about it and gets shipped out to Seattle.)

Andrew Friedman on Sirius XM's MLB Network Radio yesterday regarding #Dodgers status re: luxury tax: "We are well over (chuckled) with no CBT gymnastics in sight that will get us under... I was joking with Stan (Kasten) the other day. He made some public comments that he expected us to be over and I wanted to deliver on that. We definitely did."

Keep in mind. the Dodgers are also paying Maeda up to $11 mil to play for the Twins this year. I think they're resigned to be over the threshold.

FWIW, even if Maeda reaches those incentives, the Dodgers will still be about ~$20 mil under the top level threshold.

Very interesting that ownership vetoed such a relatively minor trade that clearly made the team better. I get that Moreno is shooting for an elite arm (whatever that means/would be), so maybe he is holding onto assets? Do we know the two prospects that would've gone to the Dodgers?

In any case this could work out very well for Jo Adell.

Whatever they are saying now publicly, it's clear they were trying to unload Peterson and Stripling, the only good reason being to save some money.

The Cardinals could use both a good hitting OF and more SP depth, and still have the prospects to make this happen.

The Dodgers kicked in money in the revamped Twins' trade that they didn't originally. I don't think trading Pederson and Stripling would now put them below the luxury tax, so there's not reason to dump them without a better return.
