No hyperbole, that has to be on the short list of worst plays in MLB history, doesn't it? Literally, if the first baseman takes two steps back and steps on first base, the inning is over.

For those who haven't seen it, here's the play. Audio for that is the Pirates' radio announcers. And be sure to watch to the end for Anthony Rizzo's reaction in the dugout.

Hell, if they just end up executing the throw to first base and the second baseman beats Javy to the bag, the run still doesn't count. At any point in the play, the first baseman could have realized that he just had to beat Javy to the bag and nothing else mattered.

My favorite part is Baez enthusiastically making the "safe" sign and then still beating the throw to first. Which is of course offline, so Javy scoots into second. Just unbelievable.

Cubs actually got two runs out of that play - Baez came around and scored later in the inning. And the Cubs won today's game by ... two runs.

I heard my wife watching baseball so went upstairs. Evidently she came upon that link with the title "Worst baseball play ever". I scoffed and she said, no, I think it might be. But you know better than me. I watched it once and then it replayed. The second time I realized there were two outs. And then realized that if the second baseman had gotten his butt over to first, they still had an excellent chance of retiring Baez and erasing the run. And then the throw. And the second throw.

My goodness.

The next five or six watches weren't analytical. Just entertainment. I may watch it all summer.

Will Craig also went 0 for 4. Unfortunately, he only struck out once. Still, not only is that, perhaps, the worst play ever in MLB history, with his 0 for 4 and his #### up allowing two unearned runs in a 5-3 loss, that may be in the running for worst game by a position player in MLB history. How marvelous.

I wonder if the Pirates broadcasters ever realized that. As was the case with you, it wasn't until the second watching where it dawned on me that none of the stuff at home plate mattered - that if they just retired Baez the run doesn't count.

Among many other reasons, I'm glad the Baez/Craig play gave mlb.com a reason to link to this play, which I had not seen or thought about in quite a while. Still glorious, 9 years later.

No, this is the worst play ever by virtue of it resulting in a Yankees win. All Jack Cust has to do is NOT FALL DOWN as he runs toward an UNGUARDED HOME PLATE IN EXTRA INNINGS and the game is tied with the home Orioles still batting with a runner on 2nd.

Instead, he fell down.... undoubtedly tripped up by Mystique and Aura.

The run doesn’t score until all the forced players reach their designated base. So tagging the runner would still have “erased” the run.

The play is entertaining on so many levels. Leaving aside the part about not tagging or just going to the bag, or when Baez plays up there with the safe sign but my favourite part is that not 1, not 2, but 3 throws to 3 different bases(including home) are terrible. The throw home was high(had to throw over Baez, throw to 1B is way off line and the throw 2B nearly hits Baez and the player on the bag can't catch the ball. It's keystone cops level comedy.

Hey, the day wasn't over yet! They scored 4 runs in game 2 despite slugger Tomas Nido getting the game off and the team going 5-for-21. They won both ends of the doubleheader despite batting .195 on the day. And it's sad to say, I had to doublecheck to see whether that in fact brought down the team batting average (it did).

Possibly some little league when he was 11 as I've seen that play executed on a few little league diamonds over the years. Complete with chasing the runner down the line and all the overthrows.

(they are listing it at 416 feet.. Dead away center field.... anything less than 460 is a lie) (407 is the listed centerfield, he hit the scoreboard roughly 30 feet away from that... nobody with a rational brain thinks it's less than 440 feet away)

He has 30 hr power, he also is a gold glove level defender in the corners, you live with his limitations... basically he's kingman with gold glove defense... nobody is going to have a problem with that, if you build the team with other more rounded players. He's not an Mvp candidate, he's a 3- 4 war player that you live with.

yep... watching the replay on that homer, and there is no way that thing went "just 416 feet".... That thing was a blast to dead away centerfield, cleared the fence by 30 feet... at the minimum. (he literally hit the ball directly over the 413 sign on the fence, roughly 30 feet higher)

Carlos Martinez has appeared to be Carlos Martinez for his last several starts, here is hope that he's back, he's 29 years old, so it's to the point you can no longer give a pass for future potential, but have to live with current ability. But his first three starts of the season has really distorted his quality (last five has been 32 ip with an era of 2.51...only issue is a lack of strikeouts in that time frame so it might be a bit deceptive... ultimately he might just be a three or four starter, but he has been pretty successful at keeping runs down for 6 starts)

Dodgers say before the game that they want David Price to go "once through the order" as they stretch him out on his first start.

8 up, 8 down, only 35 pitches and now the pitcher (Alex Wood, who is bad even for a pitcher as a hitter) due up.

time to go to the bullpen, lol. Price threw a whopping 35 pitches.

so if you want him to go once thru the order, let's assume 45 pitches would be efficient. once he whiffs Wood, he'll be at 38 to 40 and he's mission accomplished. he already K'd 5 of the 8 actual hitters and is hitting every edge of the strike zone and not even breaking a sweat (and Price had allowed 2 R in his last 10 IP).

but it's important to bring another lefty, a non-entity who is quite wild.

how wild? he somehow walks Wood and then follows with another walk.

I was PRAYING for the 3-run HR at this point, but it was not to be.

and somewhere out there, a person exists who loves that pitching change.

You know that battle plans are only there as an option and potential... if things work better than expected, you should go a bit deeper, depending on the response of the pitcher.... Go another inning...

At the same time, if as a team you feel the game is meaningless, simply because you are clearly the best team in baseball... then heck maybe relax a little... it's a tightrope I get it, but if you are the Dodgers, you literally can do no wrong here.

here comes Joe Kelly - who immediately serves up a meatball HR to Longoria.

still, the Dodgers still lead, 2-1. with 2 outs in the 3rd, Betts hits a deep drive to CF, where the Giants decided to have Austin Slater play a CF on TV (he has more MLB starts in 1B than CF. he's a corner OF). Slater gamely tries hard to field it as any non-CF would - so it's a triple followed by a JTurner 2-run HR.

Cards pull it out - stay ahead of Cubs. Need to kick Arizona while down to stay ahead of surging Cubs and brewers.

It took a couple months but the wheat is separating from the chaff in the standings. Only surprises now are giants and Twins and it’s possible both are regressing to mean

I'm looking at the stats that have been updated as of this morning (friday morning) on bb-ref... Tommy Edman has 7.3 career war in 802 pa... not bad It seems everyone is thinking he's just a filler piece, but he actually looks to be a legit major league, borderline all star quality player, at least for the next few years.
