Pete Rose, banned from baseball for betting on games, launches gambling podcast

Pete Rose gets it, and he knows what’s coming.

But even though it may not be the best thing for him to be doing considering he received a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball for gambling, he has launched a new gambling podcast.

“I know how it looks, and people will criticize,” Rose said, via USA Today. “But it’s not gambling. It’s handicapping. I’m a handicapper.”

Rose, of course, received a lifetime ban from the sport in 1989 after an investigation determined that he bet on games — including with the Cincinnati Reds while he was the manager.

Rose’s podcast — “Pete Rose’s Daily Picks” — will drop new episodes six days a week. Per USA Today, Rose will release five episodes each day lasting between 15 to 20 minutes, and one episode will last about an hour. He will be joined on the Quake Media show by Ben Wilson.

The podcast will include all sports, not just baseball.

“I watch two or three baseball games a day,” Rose said, via USA Today. “And it’s not just baseball. I watch all sports. I love sports. I know I can help people who want to wager on sports.”

This can only help in his quest to re-enter the good graces of baseball.

I guess if Rose has given up on ever getting back into baseball he figures he might as well just lean into things and make some money. Or maybe he sees the way sports betting has basically consumed the major sports and thinks it's open season at this point.

Also, wasn't Rose a famously terrible gambler?

You are giving Rose way too much benefit here.

i'm sure it will never be explicitly acknowledged by the powers that be, but at this point, isn't rose being kept out of baseball primarily because he's been credibly accused of statutory rape?

At this point, I think it's fairly clear that there are enough reasons to keep Rose out of baseball that there's no reason to designate one as a primary.

You beat me to it. MLB has absolutely zero standing to criticize Rose or any other player who associates himself with gambling interests.

Thinking fans should be allowed to gamble, but not people associated with the sport to gamble (which is illegal under most state laws that allow gambling) are two thoughts you can hold in your head at the same time.

MLB shouldn't criticize anyone for "associating himself with gambling interests" at this point. But I think they can still criticize someone who bets on games while playing/coaching/umpiring.

If Rose wants to have a gambling podcast, I don't think that should have any bearing on his reinstatement into the game. As others have said, there are plenty of other good reasons to oppose that.

#8 No. Bud Selig explained MLB's stance with unusual clarity.

Rose agreed to a permanent ban and never provided any reason for MLB to rescind it. This hasn't changed.

Near as I can tell, Rose has spent the past 35 years accumulating reasons to not rescind the ban. If you didn't know better, you'd think that he's doing it on purpose. (But we know better - see #7.)

which means you could make money fading him. Someone who's almost always wrong is just as valuable as someone who's almost always right

No, but neither is MLB's partnering with gambling interests. It's just pathetic.

Thinking fans should be allowed to gamble

Then just decriminalize gambling. I'd be all in favor of that. But having MLB encourage it is another story altogether.

Felipe Hernandez suspended for betting on MLS matches

Major League Soccer has suspended Sporting Kansas City midfielder Felipe Hernandez without pay for the remainder of 2021 due to violations of the league’s gambling integrity rules and standards of conduct. Hernandez engaged in extensive and unlawful sports gambling while a member of Sporting Kansas City that included placing wagers on two MLS matches, in direct contravention of league rules.

MLS initiated an investigation on July 5, 2021, after Hernandez disclosed to Sporting Kansas City that he was concerned about his personal safety due to his gambling debts. MLS and Sporting Kansas City immediately took steps to refer the matter to law enforcement and ensure that Hernandez received necessary support and counseling.

#24 I know back in the day MLB used to have retired FBI agents give a talk on the matter. Not "gambling is evil", but "MLB will bring the hammer down if you have money on MLB games."

No idea if they still do. The retired FBI agents seemingly helped to convey how seriously MLB took that matter.

I think both those situations are rare. Given that every pick is basically a coin flip, with the 10% vig, or the odds used in baseball, it's hard to justify gambling large mounts of money, given that the regression toward 50% will eat at your ROI.
