Pete Rose had bats corked in ‘84, former Expos groundskeeper says

“A former groundskeeper for the Montreal Expos recently told the Montreal Gazette that Rose routinely had an Olympic Stadium staffer cork his bats in 1984. Rose played most of the 1984 season for the Expos before he was traded back to his original club, the Cincinnati Reds, that August.

Joe Jammer, then an Expos groundskeeper and now a musician in London, told the Gazette in a telephone interview, “Pete Rose would have his bats corked in the visitors’ clubhouse at Olympic Stadium. I found out he was corking bats.

“Pete was too smart to deal with Expos equipment manager John Silverman [to cork his bats in the Expos’ clubhouse]. So Bryan Greenberg, who worked in the visitors’ clubhouse, did it. He took me into a room, a door to the left, and underneath tarps there was this machine.””

This sounds like the start of a horror movie.

But really, Pete Rose being super sketch doesn't carry any shock value. Corking bats is about the very bottom on the baseball-sin totem pole, and given that Pete checked all of the boxes above it, he might as well go for the perfecta (if you'll let me mix some metaphors there).

I am shocked, SHOCKED, I tell you, to hear of this allegation. Everybody out at once.
They should form a Congressional committee to investigate.
(Since it involves Montreal, perhaps some sort of tripartite investigation would be more appropriate?)
We must get to the bottom of this.

Like LeBron James and Scarlett Johansson?

Hardly seems fair - Albert Pujols won the MVP in 2009. Were people just not supposed to talk about him that year?

Rose hit .259/.334/.295 for the Expos that year. Over the previous two years for the Phillies, he had hit .260/.332/.315. So either the corked bats had no effect on his hitting, or he was corking his bats in Philadelphia, too. Knowing Pete, I'd bet on the latter.

In 2010 we found out about Pete Rose's corked bats from 1985, and now we know about Pete Rose's corked bats from 1984. By the next century his whole career could be in question.

I remember hearing about debunking the efficacy of corked bats but it was always showing that they didn't lead to the ball traveling farther. But isn't the real issue that it gives you a faster swing? Which for a guy in his late 30s and 40s whose approach has always been "hit 170 singles and 40 doubles a year, and maybe a couple homers", would be a big help.

According to Joe Jammer, Joe Jammer got the name "Joe Jammer" from Jimmy Page and/or Robert Plant. So there's that.

Lighter bats gets you faster bat speeds. There's no rule for how light your bat can be.
   13. cardsfanboy Posted: May 13, 2020 at 08:14 PM (#5950252)
honestly... the surprising thing is that anyone would think this is "fake"... I was pretty much sure Pete corked before...

as to the benefits of corked bats, it doesn't matter whether it's beneficial or not..... it's the fact that it's active attempt to cheat.
   14. cardsfanboy Posted: May 13, 2020 at 08:16 PM (#5950254)
But to me, the point of 'lighter bats' is that it allows a professional hitter a fraction more of a second to change the trajectory of their swing, meaning more hits on the sweet spot of the bat or more foul tips instead of swing and miss etc... that half inch can matter. In my theory.... others like to argue that once you start the swing you can't change the trajectory no matter what, I know, it's a stupid argument, but you hear it nearly every time someone brings up corked bats.
   15. McCoy Posted: May 13, 2020 at 08:50 PM (#5950263)
It's a stupid rule and the cheat can be accomplished legally by using a lighter bat. Corking doesn't give you any kind of edge like say doctoring the ball.

George Brett cheated when he broke the pine tar rule. Still a stupid rule.

Knowing In honor of Pete, I'd bet on the latter.
