Phil Nevin out as Angels manager after missing playoffs again with Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout

Phil Nevin will not return as manager of the Los Angeles Angels, the team announced Monday. Nevin’s contract expired after the season, so technically he has not been fired. He was simply not offered a new contract. This ends his tenure as the club’s manager after a year-and-a-half. GM Perry Minasian will hold a press conference Tuesday, indicating he will return as GM.

Nevin, 52, took over the reins midway through the 2022 campaign when veteran skipper Joe Maddon was dismissed. He led the Angels to a 46-60 finish as the interim manager, a performance that inspired Los Angeles to give him a one-year extension as well as the official title.

Alas, Nevin proved unable to guide the Angels to their first postseason appearance since 2014. He’s now part of what could prove to be an offseason of change for the franchise, headlined by the expected departure of two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani through free agency.

The Angels really need a re-think. I can't think of a team more lost than they are. The A's seem to be deliberately lost so I'm not counting them

The Angels need what almost all down-and-out teams in sports need: new ownership. Till they get that, nothing will change.

They could move to -- throws dart -- huh, Norman OK, didn't see that coming.

More likely, cuz the Baseball Gods love this sort of thing, Ohtani will leave, Trout will be pretty much done and they'll pull off a 2001 Mariners, led by Luis Rengifo and Mickey Moniak.

EDIT: Wow, I hadn't realized how badly they had collapsed. They beat Atl on July 31 to move to 56-51 then went an A's-ian 17-38 over the last two months.

The next Angels manager won't get to miss the postseason again with Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. Bah-da-bump.

i haven't been paying attention but - nevin didn't seem that great anyway? i mean, of course arte is the problem but i didn't have the impression that nevin was a solution either.

Pittsburgh at least has an interesting young core - Hayes, Cruz, Gonzales, Keller, Priester, plus they locked up Reynolds

Who on the current Angels roster will be on the team in four years to play in Trout's decline phase? Maybe Schanuel and Neto?

small sample, but while i knew that schanuel on-based .402 (!!), i did not know that he slugged .330 (sad face).

what about this could two teams enter an agreement to trade each others best players every two years and so maximize each teams chance of getting to the playoffs? heres how it works

YEAR ONE: PIT trades: Bryan Reynolds, K'Bryan Hayes, Keller, Bendar and Sluwinski.

in return:

LAA trades: Rendon, Hunter Renfro, Taylor Ward and 5 PTBNL.

LAA gets an overnight 12 wins boost going to 85 wins.

YEAR THREE: LAA sends Ohtani, Trout, Zach Neto and Logan OHoppe to PIT.

also: LAA trades BReynolds for FIVE PTBNL.

PROFIT!

If I remember correctly from last year, Nevin wasn't seen as a particularly great managerial mind even last year so much as a redass change in personality from Joe Maddon. Which, I suppose, probably illustrates the extent to which Moreno and the rest are kind of impulsively flailing even if you don't lose much in firing this guy.

O'Hoppe looks very solid if his shoulder is sound.

Still, he's already on the all-Nolan team (and, not even bothering to check, dominates the all-Schanuel team).

Sure, Buck Showalter would listen if the Angels called.

@NYPost_Mets

Buck Showalter is interested in the Angels’ managerial opening, according to a source, and trying hard to get an interview. The job isn’t deemed attractive within the industry because GM Perry Minasian is entering the final year of his contract. But Showalter wants to manage.

after missing playoffs again with Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout

I made this point in another thread, but this formulation isn't really fair to Nevin. Trout only played one game after July 3; at that point the Angels were 45-42 and in the thick of the Wild Card race.

He didn't miss the playoffs with Trout, he missed the playoffs without him. (And of course, Ohtani missed the last month of the season as well.)

#15 The Angels hit .223/.279/.378 in August and .223/.282/.383 from Sept 1 on.

And it wasn't so much players slumping as other injuries and playing a lot of ... available ... players.

The only big slump I can see was Mickey Moniak, and well he was available in the first place because of past failures.
