1. The Duke Posted: October 02, 2023 at 09:54 PM (#6143228)More likely, cuz the Baseball Gods love this sort of thing, Ohtani will leave, Trout will be pretty much done and they'll pull off a 2001 Mariners, led by Luis Rengifo and Mickey Moniak.
EDIT: Wow, I hadn't realized how badly they had collapsed. They beat Atl on July 31 to move to 56-51 then went an A's-ian 17-38 over the last two months.
clearly phil was responsible for everything wrong with the team, just like joe maddon and bradley awesomeness were
arte is teh sukc
PIT says "Ahoy, matey."
Who on the current Angels roster will be on the team in four years to play in Trout's decline phase? Maybe Schanuel and Neto?
YEAR ONE: PIT trades: Bryan Reynolds, K'Bryan Hayes, Keller, Bendar and Sluwinski.
in return:
LAA trades: Rendon, Hunter Renfro, Taylor Ward and 5 PTBNL.
LAA gets an overnight 12 wins boost going to 85 wins.
YEAR THREE: LAA sends Ohtani, Trout, Zach Neto and Logan OHoppe to PIT.
also: LAA trades BReynolds for FIVE PTBNL.
PROFIT!
If I remember correctly from last year, Nevin wasn't seen as a particularly great managerial mind even last year so much as a redass change in personality from Joe Maddon. Which, I suppose, probably illustrates the extent to which Moreno and the rest are kind of impulsively flailing even if you don't lose much in firing this guy.
Still, he's already on the all-Nolan team (and, not even bothering to check, dominates the all-Schanuel team).
after missing playoffs again with Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout
I made this point in another thread, but this formulation isn't really fair to Nevin. Trout only played one game after July 3; at that point the Angels were 45-42 and in the thick of the Wild Card race.
He didn't miss the playoffs with Trout, he missed the playoffs without him. (And of course, Ohtani missed the last month of the season as well.)
And it wasn't so much players slumping as other injuries and playing a lot of ... available ... players.
The only big slump I can see was Mickey Moniak, and well he was available in the first place because of past failures.
