Philadelphia Phillies’ Alec Bohm says emotions got best of him after errors, leading to pointed comment

Alec Bohm might find it easier in Philadelphia to make up for errors in the field than one with his mouth.

The three E-5s were nothing compared to one F-bomb he dropped in frustration.

Lip-readers ran wild when cameras caught Bohm having some choice words after his second error.

“I f—-ing hate this place,” he said….

Bohm made three errors at third base in the first three innings, a bad look as he tries to win the third base job over rookie Bryson Stott.

Bohm said “emotions got the best of me” and did not mean any offense toward the franchise or Philadelphia.

“I said it. Do I mean it? No,” Bohm said. “It’s a frustrating night for me, obviously. Made a few mistakes in the field. Look, these people, these fans, they just want to win. You heard it, we come back, they’re great. I’m just sorry to them. I don’t mean that.”

That's a nice line: did I say it, yes. Did I mean it, no. Most politicians can't talk with that kind of clarity.

part of "reading the room" with athletes is figuring out which ones thrive on extra competition - and which ones fall apart.

Stott has been the golden child of PHI management for months.

if they want to move on from Bohm and install Stott, nothing wrong with that. at all. it's not personal, it's business.

but if they thought that Bohm could handle having Stott - who could have used more ABs in the minors - in direct battles for AB right out of the gate, then they misfired.

unless they expected this and would just as soon release Bohm.

I do think the better path was to give Bohm the job for a month and see how it panned out - and how Stott hit in the minors.

I don't really see a benefit to this approach - granting that Bohm makes 3 errors in a couple of innings and the Phillies get 5 in the 8th to win 5-4.

if both guys got off to good starts and an MLB team had an injury at 3B, the Phils might have gotten something for Bohm. that ship may now have sailed.

The best approach for the Phillies was eating half of Gregorius' salary and trading him back to the Yankees.

Bohm would still draw some trade interest right now. Plenty of teams think they can "fix him" still I'm sure. His defense is fairly bad at 3B. He's likely to end up at 1B eventually anyhow. In positive news, he'll hit better than Maikel Franco at 3B in most outcomes, so, they'll just accept his bad D probably.

sample size alert: MFranco was 4 for 5 with a HR and 5 RBI on Monday for the Nationals.

If the Philadelphia Daily News does not use "F-Bohm" is its headline, I will be disappointed.

Bohm was the 3rd overall pick in 2018, raked in the minors and in 2020. Giving up on him after 400 poor PAs would be foolish.

#4 And Bohm has a 692 OPS+ as long as we're talking small sample size.

FWIW, Stott made an error in his one game at 3B. It's Rick Schu all over again!!

Huh ... b-r hasn't updated its team stats page structure to reflect the NL DH (i.e. the DH is listed in the "bench" section, not the "starting" section.

wow, that's cute. EVen beats retired John Paciorek's OPS+ of 495!

But an 0-for-3 brings it down from 692 to about 250.
