Philadelphia Phillies get Jose Alvarado in 3-team trade with Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Dodgers

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado in a three-team trade with the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

In the deal, Tampa Bay sent Alvarado to Philadelphia, the Phillies sent left-hander Garrett Cleavinger to the Los Angeles and the Dodgers sent infielder Dillon Paulson and a player to be named later to Tampa Bay.

Alvarado, 25, has a career ERA of 3.46 in 149 appearances over four seasons with the Rays. He pitched in nine games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and had a 6.00 ERA. His best season was in 2018, when he appeared in a career-high 70 games and had a 2.39 ERA. He is 2-15 in his career with 15 saves.

Nothing to say here other than this may be the least interestingn 3-way trade in history.

As a Phillies fan, this trade seems lopsided. Alvarado is vaguely interesting and is an upgrade over dozens of the pitchers that the Phils have thrown out there in the last few years. There's nothing remotely interesting about Cleavinger. Irrationally, the fact that the Phils are entangled with the Dodgers and Rays in this trade makes me worry that the Phils just got fleeced.

Probably has more to do with the fact that Alvarado became arb-eligible, and the Rays don't see any need to pay a million or more for a fungible relief arm.

The Rays have the ability to consistently find cheap, effective relief pitchers. Often, teams that have that ability then use it to flip such pitchers to teams who have trouble doing so, get a disproportionate amount of talent for it, and build their roster.

The Rays use that talent to keep trading those relief pitchers right at the point where they'd start to make money, knowing they can likely replace that pitcher with another one just like him next year. They don't have any money, so they use this special skill to just keep staying cheap.

With Dombrowski now at the helm, I might be a bit more concerned about the next 7-10 year mega-contract.

Unimportant but obligatory comment from one of BTF's few Rays fans: Just what the Rays need, another damn middle infielder. Hope the PTBNL is, maybe, an OF with power? A lottery ticket? Anything but an infielder?

Just what the Rays need, another damn middle infielder.

Actually, he's a 1B, not a MI.

I think the main draw here is that he's a non-roster player, and the Rays needed to open a roster spot after the Snell trade.
