Phillies’ Andrew McCutchen disses Yankees’ hair policy

Andrew McCutchen thinks the Yankees should cut their hair policy.

“I definitely do think it takes away from our individualism as players and as people,” McCutchen told Jensen Karp on “The Sports Bubble” podcast. “We express ourselves in different ways.”....

“I feel like maybe there should be some change there in the future — who knows when — but it’s just one of the many things in this game that I feel that there just needs ... it needs to be talked about, and to be addressed,” said McCutchen, who took a three-year, $50-million deal from Philadelphia following his stint with the Yankees.

Of course, McCutchen’s stay with the Yankees wasn’t all bad. In fact, he called the organization “great.” He said he felt a little more “powerful” wearing the pinstripes.

If the Yankees' hair policy is what keeps them from looking like the disgusting slobs who populated the Red Sox in some recent seasons, then I'm all for it.

I'll take the Samson like hair and qualities that accompanied the 4 recent championships as opposed to clinging to the lone win from the last 20 years from the clean cut crew over there in the Bronx.

C'mon at least act like a large market fan. The only Championship that matters is next year's. The rest is just history.

I can get as much joy out of remembering things that happened 20, 30, and 40 years ago, as I can things that happened 5 years ago.

Well, yeah, steroids will do that to you.

He's right, hopefully they will listen. (Isn't it Steinbrenner's daughter who pushes to keep that policy?) That dumb policy has been in place for 43 years now and has only resulted in 7 World Series titles. Let them grow hair! We need Charlie Finley.

Isn't the whole point to take away their individualism?

The point is the taking away, not the purported objective of the taking away.

I'm having a tough time understanding that. Do you mean the point of the rule is to make a display of power? And that curbing individualism is just a pretense for flexing that muscle?

Yes, mostly. They don't curb individualism. They don't tell them they can't have their own high-five / handshake, or their own way of celebrating success. They don't all have to have the same batting stance. They don't have to suppress their emotions and just put their head down and run the bases. They have a somewhat wide berth on what they wear and what they do off the field, even while on the road. On field and off, they can largely interact with fans how they wish.

The team curbs hairstyle and non-mustache facial hair, which is a rather small component of individualism. They curb it to force conformity to an outdated image of respectable white folk, dating back to a time when deviation from that image was seen by white men in power as a challenge to the entire connection between that image and respectability, and indirectly as a challenge to their power. "Nonconformist" grooming means almost nothing of that sort now, as hairstyles and facial hair have become more acceptable (or at least non-controversial) and differences do not stem from any kind of message to white men in power. That battle concluded years ago, and professional environments now feature all kinds of hairstyles and beards.

The only remaining point of the rule is to exert power, which was the main point of it long ago. The only difference was that long ago it was seen by ownership as exertion of power against a counterculture that needed power exerted against them. It was dumb then, and it's even dumber now. The only reason it has perpetuated as long as it has is that male professional athletes generally don't object to this look, and see conformity on this front as trivial.

Next they'll be making the players all wear the same outfits!
