Phillies break camp, head home with highest expectations in years

On his last day in Florida, Gabe Kapler put the top down and took his new and improved lineup for a spin.

The Phillies manager used what figures to be his opening day lineup — minus starting pitcher Aaron Nola — for the team’s final spring-training game Monday.

The unit — with a little help from minor-leaguer Malvin Matos — pulled out a curtain-closing, 3-2, win over the Tampa Bay Rays at sun-splashed Spectrum Field. Matos, up for the day from minor-league camp, won it with a walk-off homer in the bottom of ninth and everybody left happy.

Which, of course, could lead to the most disgruntled fans in years if those expectations are not met….

Seems like the national expectations are higher than the local ones. SI puts them in the World Series, and Vegas is bullish as well, but the vibe here seems to be: "playoffs would be nice." Contention and 85 wins would be disappointing, but not devastating.

one thing i find kind of interesting is that if you look at 2018's park factors, 3 of the phillies big offseason acquisitions played in one of MLB's 5 worst hitting environments. if there's anything to it, then realmuto coming from MIA, segura coming from SEA and mccutchen coming from SF could be teed up for surprisingly good seasons.

home: .269/.329/.444 ; 109 sOPS+
away: .283/.350/.520 ; 140 sOPS+

home: .281/.301/.402 ; 90 sOPS+
away: .325/.379/.427 ; 127 sOPS+

home: .245/.379/.408 ; 116 sOPS+
away: .263/.358/.438 ; 123 sOPS+

personally, i think i'd go with this lineup:
segura SS
harper (L) RF
franco 3B
hoskins 1B
realmuto C
herrera (S) CF
mccutchen LF
hernandez (S) 2B
