Phillies, Craig Kimbrel agree to 1-year, $10 million deal, sources say

Free agent reliever Craig Kimbrel and the Philadelphia Phillies are in agreement on a one-year, $10 million contract, sources confirmed to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The 14-year veteran and eight-time All-Star had an up-and-down first year with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.

Kimbrel posted a 3.75 ERA and a career-low 27.7% strikeout rate with the Dodgers.

Philly will be such a kind, patient, and nurturing environment for Kimbrel to turn things around.

career-low 27.7% strikeout rate

Thought I'd point out how insane this is. Kimbrel is obviously extreme in this regard, but that this is his career LOW is some indication of the degree to which TTO has taken over baseball.

Not only is 27% his career low, it is by far since his career rate is 40%. And his high water mark was 50%.

Good place as any to inquire where Aroldis Chapman is going to end up, if anywhere. If his issues with that tattoo were ever discussed here (that I just found on Google) I must have missed it.

Kimbrel on a one year deal is an acceptable risk for the Phillies, especially because they've shown that they can dump players that don't work out (e.g., Familia, Herrera and Gregorius last year).

This seems like a great deal in the current reliever market. I'd much rather have Kimbrel than any of Rogers, Lugo, Strom, Martin, Kelly, etc.

He was elite in 2021, and you're only on the hook for one year.

Post-Girardi the Phillies seem to finally understand sunk cost. This is a good thing.
