Phillies Release Mark Appel

The Phillies announced today that right-hander Mark Appel has been released. He had been in camp on a minor league deal. They also reassigned left-hander Ben Bowden, right-hander Louis Head and catcher Max McDowell to minor league camp.

Appel, 31, had been having a rough showing this spring. In six appearances, he allowed six walks and ten hits, including three home runs. He did record five strikeouts, but the seven earned runs in 5 2/3 innings led to an ERA of 11.12.

The righty was looking continue a nice comeback story from last year. The first overall pick from the 2013 draft, taken by the Astros, Appel was a mainstay of top prospect lists for a few years. He was traded to the Phillies prior to the 2016 season in the deal that sent Ken Giles to Houston. Unfortunately, his results in the minors didn’t live up to his prospect pedigree, with elbow and shoulder injuries hampering his progress.

He walked away from the game after the 2017 season, candidly discussing his physical and mental struggles with Joon Lee of Bleacher Report at that time, admitting that he might be the worst draft bust in MLB history. “It depends on how you define it, but I probably am,” Appel said. “I had high expectations. I didn’t live up to those for a number of reasons. If you want to call me the biggest draft bust, you can call it that. … If I never get to the big leagues, will it be a disappointment? Yes and no. That was a goal and a dream I had at one point, but that’s with stipulations that I’m healthy, I’m happy and doing something I love. If I get to the big leagues, what’s so great about the big leagues if you’re in an isolated place, you’re hurt and you’re emotionally unhappy? How much is that worth to you?”

Appel caught attention a few days ago for a "well-regarded Twitter thread" about his place in the game.

The chemicals contained in common plastics have been linked to adolescent asthma and other serious ailments. Luckily there is a new technology which serves a similar purpose. Frank

Massive Haul would be a decent band name.

Is my memory correct that Appel was one of the last "signability" picks, who got drafted before obviously better players because the drafting team was trying to economize on the draft?

Henry Davis was kind of a signability #1.

Appel was and Davis was, yeah.

Otoh, Carlos Correa kind of was too. (Difference is Correa was considered a possible #1 than the other two)

Which time? IIRC Appel was drafted twice and signability or not, didn’t sign the first time

Appel was considered by some to be the top pick of the 2012 draft (BA had him #4), but slid due to draft demands - #1 pick Carlos Correa was the "signability pick" that year signing for less than #2 pick Byron Buxton.

In 2013, BA ranked Appel #2 in their draft rankings behind Jon Gray, and his $6.3M bonus was the largest of the draft.

Also, teams still do "signability" picks all the time, at least signing a guy way below bonus slot so they can use the bonus slot later in the draft. The O's did it recently with Heston Kjerstad.

Massagers come in a variety of sizes and designs, so it’s important to find one that fits your body type and needs. Many massagers feature various massage techniques such as kneading, rolling, and tapping to target the neck, shoulders, and other areas of the body. Heather

3 times actually. Detroit drafted him in the 15th round in 2009.

i watched him pitch i think the year, maybe 2, after he got drafted. I had already seen some video, could NOT believe he was a #1 pick. i know he wouldn't have gotten to no A ball if he was a 20th round pick. or even 5th round. obviously lousy mechanics, poor control.

"You can keep your massive haul" being a spambot account is weird. I don't remember the username and am not sure if it used to be something different, but unlike the other spambots, they joined in 2006 and have made nearly 5,000 comments here.

Everybody thought Carlos Correa was a signability pick at #1, but then it turned out he was actually the best player in the draft. Eight years later the same scout / GM chose Heston Kjerstad with the #2 pick, and the way he's raking these days he might turn out to be the best player in that draft.

A 23 year old who strikes out over 25% of the time in High-A doesn't inspire a lot of confidence for me.

Heston Kjerstad lost almost two years of playing time to myocarditis, so his age shouldn't be counted against him. After finally getting on the field again last summer he was the MVP in the Arizona Fall League, and is now hitting .381/.409/.810 in 22 Spring Training games. Kjerstad will probably start 2023 at AA, but should be a fast climber. Don't be surprised if he's a middle of the order bat in the Orioles' opening day lineup a year from now.
