Phillies to sign Didi Gregorius | MLB.com

The Phillies are in agreement on a contract with free-agent shortstop Didi Gregorius, sources tell MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi. MLB Network insider Joel Sherman was first to report the news. Philadelphia has not announced a deal, which is for one season and worth $14 million, according to multiple reports.

Hope Didi has a great year and gets a huge deal in 2021. As a Yankees fan, I'll miss him. But I'm glad to see Gleyber play his natural position, where he should be a fixture for the next decade.

Second the above thought. With Andujar returning along with Urshela, Gleyber and DJ, Didi became expendable.

Wins are wins.

The Phillies are aiming to get wins in the starting rotation (Wheeler) and the infield (Didi). Both work.

Seems like a potential steal for, but what do I know?
   6. Walt Davis Posted: December 10, 2019 at 10:57 PM (#5907646)
Segura to 2B? Anyway, certainly a _potential_ steal but he didn't bounce back from the injury too well last year so there's extra risk here as well. This would be $3-5 M more than they'd have had to pay Cesar Hernandez so we'll have a quickie comparison on whether this decision works out.

I'm assuming Segura to 3B so they can put Scottie Jetpax (Kingery) at 2B permanently. Or, if they are serious about pursuing Rendon**, they'd probably trade Segura for some magic beans.

** I have loved that guy since the first game I every saw him play. I'm glad I'm not a GM, I would pay him an irrational amount of money.

Didi was one of my favourite players on the 2015-18 Yankees, and is now definitely my favourite non-Yankee player. It might be in part the contrast with late-era Jeter in the field, and overcoming the difficulty of following that particular career, but it'll be hard not to be rooting for him now.

Didi had a rough couple of weeks when he started with the Yankees, but soon became a valuable, steady player until his injury. If now healthy, he should contribute in Philly, but they may only have him for 1 season.

What's wrong with that?

I once had a high school teacher ask if I had dropped 'Rusty' and gone back to 'Russell'. My legitimate answer was 'why would I do that?'

It has been my name my whole life and I am not going to change because someone else thinks it isn't 'grown' enough.

I imagine Didi thinks the same.

Hey, it worked for Dee Dee Ramone.

That's "Sir Didi" to you.

Didi is from Curacao, over there it's probably as staid and frumpy a name as Abraham or Winston.

From Wikipedia:
Mariekson Julius "Didi" Gregorius, OON [...] Gregorius, his father, and his brother all go by the nickname "Didi." He began using the name in the United States when teammates could not pronounce "Mariekson."

Grown ass people judging others by their family names.

Now that is ridiculous. It's one thing to have the same legal name, like Sr., Jr., but everyone using the same nickname is just gratuitously confusing.

In my opinion all baseball players should use Bossman Junior as a nickname.

Grown ass people not able to pronounce Mariekson started all this!

Ridiculous, using names like that! I for one am very comfortable judging someone's entire family by one very short statement about what nicknames they use!

Maybe I missed a joke in your post...I hope so at least.

I'm simply saying that giving everyone in the family the same nickname (or name, a la George Foreman) basically vitiates the point of a name. A name that doesn't help distinguish you from others isn't actually useful. That's why Jr. and III are things.

I once had a co-worker named Morshaun. He had 3 kids ... Morshaun Jr., Morshaun III and Morshaundra.

Even big George didn't name his daughters after himself!

   22. PreservedFish Posted: December 11, 2019 at 08:53 PM (#5907971)
I thought that big George had a Georgina or a Georgette. He probably didn't have many daughters, as scientists know that the rich and powerful tend to father more sons.

Well, you might if you were this former player with a mocking OPS+ career number.

His middle name is “Dixon”? Good grief.
