Phillies trade for Cristian Pache, put Rhys Hoskins on 60-day IL

The Philadelphia Phillies acquired center fielder Cristian Pache from the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday in exchange for minor league pitcher Billy Sullivan.

To make room for Pache on the 40-man roster, the Phillies placed first baseman Rhys Hoskins on the 60-day injured list. Hoskins will undergo surgery Thursday for a torn ACL and is out for the season.

Pache, 24, hit .166 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 91 games for the A’s in 2022. But it’s his defense the Phillies want.

Picking up Sosa last year and Pache now are two elite end of game defensive replacements. And cost controlled. Smart.

Pache has an incredible 25 OPS+ in the majors at 332 PA - so a half-season, over the course of 2020-2022.

he's only age 23, but is that playable? he is 2 for 4 in career SB, so that's not in his tool belt, either.

no one questions the defense, but can a good team carry a player like this in the modern era?

Even Ray Oyler's relatives are saying, "OOF."

Marsh is no Pache, but he is an above average defensive CF himself. Unless the plan is to put Pache in CF late in games and move Marsh to a COF to maximize his defense as well. Otherwise, I don't understand wasting a roster spot on Pache at this point.

Marsh is LHB and not a plus bat. Pache could play CF vs some LHP, and of course the Phillies are the team that might most benefit from a late-inning defensive outfielder, it matters less which of Marsh/Pache is in RF and more that one of Castellanos/Schwarber isn't.
