Phillies’ Zack Wheeler not for MLB’s proposed idea: ‘Not going to miss the birth of my first child’

Zack Wheeler was one of several players to capitalize on the salary windfall of last season, after spending the first part of his MLB career with now-division rival New York Mets, by signing a five-year, $118-million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.

To make this offseason even better, Wheeler and his wife Dominique discovered they were going to become first-time parents. With their daughter due in July, it’s an occasion Wheeler is adamant he will not miss.

“I am not going to miss the birth of my first child. I don’t care,” Wheeler told NBC10 Friday. “I’m going to be there for her and the birth of my child. That’s a fact. I think anybody would do the same thing. Any dad. Whether I have to come back here (Atlanta) and be with her and miss two more weeks because I have to quarantine to play again, so be it.”

MLB officials this week have begun exploring options to return to playing baseball in a modified format, with teams, staff and essential personnel quarantined in Arizona and Florida.

ronnie lott cut off his pinkie so he could play in the 2nd half of a preseason NFL game.

ronnie lott was so ####### brain-damaged from football that he cut off his pinkie so he could play in the 2nd half of a preseason NFL game.

Fixed.

I didn't RTFA, but if he proclaims his complete willingness to forfeit his salary during his time off - that would help.

The first part is correct, but the reason is not, at least according to this 2014 article, which has him doing it in April to avoid a lengthy rehab.

One thing I did learn from reading the article is that he regretted the decision almost immediately:

"I was trying to laugh it off, but I felt sick,” he told the AP in 1986 of first seeing the nub. “I tried to stand up, but I broke into a cold sweat. It was just a total shock. I thought, 'Oh, man, I should have had the pin put in.’

Which would be a month or more. 2 weeks self quarantine before the baby is born, and 2 weeks after.

Assuming that Wheeler has enough money that skipping that much salary isn't going to imperil his ability to pay the rent, it's something that I'd recommend. Everyone says that the day their baby was born was the happiest day of their lives, and before I had any kids I thought "yeah, right, that's what you have to say", but then I had a child and it totally was.

Oh, absolutely. my post was not mean to be disparaging of Wheeler. just pointing out that the usual 3 day paternity leave doesn't apply here. He would likely have to be out a month or more, most of it in quarantined isolation. And when that is over? Most players, especially pitchers, after missing a month have to do a minor league rehab to get into playing condition. how will that happen?

Is this quote channeling Toby Ziegler?

This article https://www.google.com/amp/s/fanbuzz.com/nfl/ronnie-lott-pinky/amp/ says Lott had the amputation after the last regular season game so he could play in the playoffs.

If it really happened in April, the decision wasn't about missing games.

Maybe Lott cut off a few of his own fingers, and the stories got mixed up?

”How many did you cut off, Ronnie?”

“Hmmm...there was one, two, three...uh...um....”

I would give up a couple of weeks of my salary to see Zack Wheeler’s baby cut off Ronnie Lott’s finger.

10-13 are awesome. Wouldn't have been out of place in peak Primer.
