Monday, June 09, 2003 - Sale of Veterans Stadium’s seats begins today

Today you can purchase seats from the Vet. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait until late fall to pick up the authentic ball park urinal you’ve been eyeing.

Is the urinal comment referencing what happened at the last game at Shibe Park? According to Michael Gershman in Diamonds, The Evolution of the Ballpark, the Phillies planned to raffle off pieces of the park after the game. Here's what Gershman says: "In addition, every fan got a souvenir seat slat on entering. Lowell Reidenbaugh relates what happened later in Take Me Out to the Ball Park: The slats turned to clubs in the hands of the exuberant marauders. Ripping, slashing, crushing, the fans made a shambles of the old park. One muscular miscreant succeeded in detaching a toilet bowl and toted it triumphantly from the park. Some brought saws and hammers to the park. In the melee that followed the end of the game, fans ripped up souvenir sod and thirty-five people had their heads bashed with souvenir slats of wood."

My dad has one of those seats from Connie Mack Stadium (Shibe Park is same place). He's not a big guy so he must have been lucky to get out with it.

Is there any difference between a 700-level seat and a urinal anyway?
