Pirates pitcher Crick has surgery after altercation

SAN FRANCISCO—Pirates right-hander Kyle Crick required season-ending surgery on the index finger of his pitching hand after he was injured in a clubhouse fight with fellow reliever Felipe Vazquez.

Crick said punches were thrown and the first punch was thrown by Vazquez, who declined to speak to reporters after Pittsburgh’s 5-4 loss to the Giants.

“One of those clubhouse altercations. A lot of bickering back and forth. Punches were thrown,” Crick said. “You kind of have to at some point stand up for yourself and start throwing back. It’s one of those deals where it’s unfortunate. It’s two losers in this deal. Nobody can win fighting a teammate. It’s just an unfortunate deal.”

Both players were fined undisclosed amounts by the Pirates for violating their contracts.

The sort of account of a fight that raises more questions than it actually answers.

So the Pirates fined the guy who didn't start the fight and was injured when his team mate started throwing punches? Hopefully whoever made that gutless decision will be shown the door (along with Vazquez) during the off season.

"Mistakes were made" in one of those many, many, many, many clubhouse altercations. You know, just run-of-the-mill stuff, nothing to see here.

Punches were thrown. Mistakes were made. Fingers were injured. Mothers were insulted.

There is some additional context to which you apparently aren't privy: Crick already got in a fight with bullpen coach Euclides Rojas earlier this year. I doubt it's as simple as Vazquez being a big ol' meanie and Crick minding his own business until he was viciously attacked.

Also, those with long memories will recall that this isn't even the first time a Pirates reliever sustained a significant injury in a fight with another Pirates reliever. Back in '98, Marc Wilkins (while on the DL with a rotator cuff issue) punched Jeff Tabaka in the lobby of the team hotel in a dispute over a game of cards, breaking Tabaka's jaw.

Sounds like his rotator cuff was working ok to me.

Hopefully he was using his non-pitching hand.

that crick dude was in the middle of that other on the field fight involving the reds reliever who wanted to take on the wwhole team. He seemed especially disenchanted by crick

Hey, maybe the guy just likes punching things.

And mlb.com states that "...that argument began when Crick complained to Rojas that the All-Star Vazquez received preferential treatment among Pittsburgh’s relievers. Crick has continued to take issue with the idea that Vazquez operates on a different schedule, according to sources." Apparently Crick has been at loggerheads with Vazquez for some time.

IIRC, when he was a Giants prospect - Crick had a reputation for being.... well... difficult.

If Crick wants to be treated like Vazquez, maybe he should try pitching like Vazquez, instead of putting up a 5+ ERA.

Crick's problems may be genetic.

So you’re saying Crick is a pain in the neck?

Thanks, I’ll be here all weekend. Tip your bartenders well.

instead of putting up a 5+ ERA.

The Pirates could be okay, the Good Lord willin' and if the Crick don't rise.

I will also jump in to say that the person who threw the first punch is not automatically the instigator.

Sometimes people really deserve to be punched.
