Pitcher Chad Bettis, Yankees reach minor league deal

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Free agent pitcher Chad Bettis signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees on Sunday with an invitation an invitation to big league spring training.

The 30-year-old right-hander was 1-6 with one save and a 6.08 ERA in 39 games, including three starts, for Colorado last season. He went on the injured list Aug. 14 with a left hip impingement and didn’t pitch the rest of the year.

It's funny how many Rockies head over to the Yankees.

Brian Cashman has made a small cottage industry in obtaining Rockies players who outperform expectations. But this signing should challenge even his ability to find gold where others see dross. Bettis wasn't even particularly good in the minor leagues much less the majors, and his 1.47 WHIP over seven major league seasons makes one wonder what exactly the Yankees see in him. He is an extreme ground ball pitcher, so maybe that is it, although his 3.15 walks per nine innings doesn't fit the profile of a successful ground ball pitcher. My guess is he is simply organizational depth.
