The Pittsburgh Pirates are building around third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes.
The Pirates and Hayes, 25, have come to terms on a new eight-year, $70 million deal pending Hayes passing a physical, according to multiple reports. A formal announcement isn’t expected until the team’s home opener on April 12, according to The Associated Press.
It is the largest contract agreement in franchise history.
Hayes struck out in the first inning of Thursday’s season opener against the St. Louis Cardinals and was removed from the game in the bottom of the inning with a spasm of his left forearm, the Pirates said, adding that he is considered day-to-day. Hayes was limited to 96 games in 2021 because of a left wrist injury.

1. Steve Balboni's Personal Trainer Posted: April 08, 2022 at 08:32 AM (#6070821)I do not watch Pirates baseball (not an exclusive club, I know...), so I've not seen Hayes much. His stats, outside of about 100 PAs during the COVID season, are pretty "eh". Even his minor league stats are fine, but not, "We can't let this guy go!". Am I missing something here?
This seems like a little of both. While not very young, there is still some potential for growth. But even if he never gets any better, he is only taking up $8.75M/yr. That is not exactly an albatross contract.
They've given early extensions to many players - McCutchen, Marte, Polanco, Harrison, McLouth, even Jose Tabata. The timing's probably somewhat calculated - announcing on Opening Day might sell some tickets before the season's gone south.
They also picked up Jake Marisnick just before opening day. last year he still had enuf foot speed to be in the upper 25% of CFers, so at 31 maybe he can still cover center.
SOme sources say they are trying to extend Brian Reynolds as well which would be good news.
That's just embarrassing.
Embarrassing, but not surprising in the least.
