Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Edgar Santana suspended 80 games

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Edgar Santana was suspended 80 games without pay by Major League Baseball on Sunday after testing positive for a banned substance.

MLB said in a statement that Santana, 28, was positive for Boldenone, a performance enhancer.

Santana, a right-handed reliever, missed the 2019 season because of Tommy John surgery.

In 2018, he appeared in 69 games for the Pirates, going 3-4 with a 3.31 ERA. He struck out 74 in 66⅓ innings that season.

He broke the rules, and that's the penalty, so there's that.

Just wondering, though - does the fact that season is now only 60 games have any bearing on a suspension like this? I mean, he is now going to miss the entire 2020 season, and then 20 games of what may well be a COVID-impacted 2021 season. Should he instead be suspended for half of the 2020 season (which is basically what the 80-game suspension was meant to achieve), which would be 30 games?

It's paywalled, but Robo Rosenthal wrote a very interesting article yet about a bunch of outstanding issues that MLB and MLBPA are still apparently working on.

The level of detail is impressive, but yeah, this is the type of thing where one does hope MLB and MLBPA can reach a meeting of the minds. Sample quote:

“All thresholds and amounts for bonuses, escalators, and other similar special covenants (e.g., performance point systems, vesting options) shall be reduced pursuant to the applicable (prorated) formula,” the agreement said. “The parties shall negotiate in good faith over the treatment of special covenants that are based on roster status as of a specific date; total days on roster; days on an Injured List; and for players who are currently injured.”

The above paragraph makes no mention of 2021, which is why the league might agree not to reduce the amounts of the vesting options for that season, one source said. If those options are simply prorated, Cubs left-hander Jon Lester would be the first player in major-league history with a buyout ($10 million) that exceeded his vesting option ($9.25 million, prorated from $25 million). The option would serve as a disincentive, rather than the incentive for which it is intended. And the league effectively would be changing previously negotiated contract language between a player and his club.

There's also stuff on vesting options (Andrew Miller's is looked into in detail) and retention bonuses for major league FAs who had signed minor league contracts.

3, maybe, but this is the type of thing where one would hope both sides can at least learn how to reach agreement on the small stuff.

(Heck, if I were MLB, I'd make sure to settle this in a way that doesn't scr*w Andrew Miller, who is one of the MLBPA mucky-mucks. It's definitely better to go into 2021 w/ a semi-content Andrew Miller than with an absolutely p*ssed off Andrew Miller)

I hope so. But I bet Fangraphs has already posted an article saying that everything has somehow already been decided in favor of the players.

If you're gonna cheat, go for the black ink.

Why are these guys still using Boldenone? They have to know players have been getting busted for it for at least a decade, so there's at least a semi-effective test available for it.

#1 (and therefore #2) -- I'd just "compromise" by letting the 60-games this season be the equivalent of 80 rather than reduce his suspension to 30.

Was Santana an age cheat by any chance? His b-r record shows nothing until an age 22 season in the Dominican summer league. That's quite unusual.
