Pregame demonstration involving parachuters at Nationals Park causes brief evacuation of U.S. Capitol

The U.S. Capitol was briefly evacuated Wednesday evening after police identified an aircraft that they said posed “a probable threat’’—but the plane was actually carrying members of the U.S. Army Golden Knights, who then parachuted into the Washington Nationals’ baseball stadium for a pregame demonstration.

The Nationals are hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks at Nationals Park, which is located a little more than a mile away from the U.S. Capitol.

The alert from the U.S. Capitol Police sent congressional staffers fleeing from the Capitol and legislative building around 6:30 p.m.

One witness to the chaos at the Capitol was Eireann Dolan, the wife of Nationals pitcher Sean Doolittle.

“I was walking the dogs past the Dirksen Senate Office Building,” Dolan tweeted. ‘‘People started streaming out all at once. They told me to turn around and get away as fast as possible. Some people were calm but many were genuinely panicked. I know I was.”

WASHINGTON -- DH RULE OVERTURNED IN DARING NATS PUTSCH.

I'm pretty sure the infield fly rule says that the government is overthrown by rule even if the Nats make no effort to seize the building.

If only our politicians felt like the rest of us.

Congress wasn’t in session, and this was after normal working hours, with the All-Clear coming fairly quickly, but it was still a pretty big screw up. Early finger pointing seems to blame the Federal Aviation Administration.

This could have been much worse - there are reportedly anti-aircraft Stinger missiles, among other measures, deployed to protect the Capitol & White House.

Without naming sources, it's not a legend about the Stingers on the roof of the White House. The runway at National Airport points right at it.

It's not quite Mathias Rust landing in Red Square, but this is a really bad look. Beijing is taking notes.

It probably doesn't help that 4/20 is Hitler's birthday and a date around which people like to make things happen. It wouldn't surprise me if Capitol police were already on a heightened state of alert.

Aren't these parachutists now supposed to be held in jail without possibility of bail?

Looking more & more like the FAA was at fault. Also of interest, Sean Doolittle’s wife was one of those who encountered the fleeing Congressional staffers:
Dolan asked one of the women coming out of the building whether everything was okay, but she was quickly told to turn around. “We are being told to evacuate immediately,” Dolan recalled the woman telling her. The woman showed Dolan a message she received on her phone about a “probable threat” and an “aircraft intrusion” as the two were running away from the building.

Dolan immediately texted her husband, Washington Nationals pitcher Sean Doolittle, that she was running home and to track her location. “Something about an aircraft,” she explained.

“There’s a flyover for our game tonight with parachuters — military appreciation night,” Doolittle texted back from Nationals Park. “But I don’t think they’d evacuate for that?”
If Congress had been in session, we’d be hearing a lot more about this.

C'mon, we need to be a little more understanding here. I can't be the only one who gets a bit paranoid after working hours on April 20th. Mid way through that second bag of Doritos, it does start to seem like the walls are closing in.
