Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-2-2019

Bismarck Tribune, October 2, 1919:

Scoring only four clean hits off Williams’ delivery, but making every hit count for a run, and in spite of ten bingles made by the White Sox off Sallee’s delivery, and notwithstanding two errors checked up against the National league champs, the Cincinnati Reds this afternoon annexed the second game in the world’s series by a score of 4 to 2.
...
Williams pitched stellar ball from start to finish, and had his support been perfect the fatal third inning trio would not have been recorded.

Dang. Bad luck so far for the White Sox. It’s nobody’s fault; these things just happen sometimes.

Not a great Birthday Team today, but at least the worst player on the field is still pretty okay. Coluccio couldn't hit, but the fielding metrics absolutely love his defense.

2B: Bill Serena (5.7 WAR)
3B: Ernie Riles (6.0 WAR)
SS/Manager: Maury Wills (39.7 WAR)

Per Dock Ellis, he and Bob Robertson were in the minors together, went into a bar somewhere in the SAL. Some attention was paid to their racial mix, Ellis counted the crowd and turned to leave - only to see Robertson locking the door from the inside. Somebody, somewhere must have done that once, right? Might as well have been Robertson.

The World Series was on the front page, along with an impending vote about the League of Nations. A pre-game story said the odds shifted to the Reds being favored after Game 1.

Neither one will end well.

From Wiki:

Pirate announcer Bob Prince called Robertson "The Mount Savage Strongboy"[2][1] and once said of him, "Robertson could hit a ball out of any park—including Yellowstone."

That does sound a bit like someone who could pull the "Which one of you is brave enough to make me leave?" trick.

Reminds me of The Bronx Tale. "Now you'ze can't leave"

When his knees went, Robertson made a lot of outs on towering popups, and nastier fans would allow that he could hit a ball OVER any park including Yellowstone.

To address the broader point, Bob Prince never said anything once.
