Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-11-2020

El Paso Herald, November 11, 1920:

ARMISTICE DAY IS OBSERVED AND MAY BRING SETTLEMENT

Armistice day found the National Association of Minor leagues in the baseball spotlight as the result of its part in peace overtures designed to prevent war between the major leagues. The minors today turned to their own affairs while the major armies rested on their arms during the truce called to permit a joint meeting of the 16 National and American league club owners…The name of federal judge Landis was mentioned everywhere, for it was freely predicted that his selection as chief justice of baseball’s supreme court would be ratified by the majority five members of the American league. The judge was chosen unanimously by the National league members and the Chicago, Boston and New York American league clubs…

Crisis averted, although Judge Landis came with a bunch of problems of his own.

Noe Munoz and Jose Munoz both born on this day in 1967, both got cups of coffee in the mid-'90s (Noe with the Dodgers in '95, Jose with the White Sox in '96).

Somehow they are not twins.

Also born this day, Al Schact, who had the largest mitt ever used on a major-league field.

In 1946 Cleveland Indians owner Bill Veeck staged one of his famous promotions, pitting Case against the legendary Jesse Owens in a 100-yard dash. Case lost to “The World’s Fastest Human” by a mere one-tenth of a second, possibly the only race he ever lost.

From SABR's bio...of course, both men were past their speed prime at that point.

George Case was one of the great Zero True Outcomes players of the 1940s.

162-game average across an 11-year career:
663 AB
187 H
3 HR
56 BB
39 K
46 SB
50 RBI
104 R

3 All-Star appearances and 4 years with some MVP votes, for the usually dire Senators.

Noe Munoz and Jose Munoz (...) (s)omehow they are not twins

They were both almost Dodgers, tho, since LA drafted Jose, too. (Noe was signed out of Mexico as an amateur free agent.)

Probably not many days where the closer has by far the most WAR on the staff. (There's one coming up in 18 days.)

It's disappointing that George Treadway isn't Jeff Treadway's great great grandfather.

The "lesser fun name" Patricio Scantlebury becomes a mega fun name when you discover it's Patricio Athelstan Scantlebury.

A quick search turns up a Scantlebury park in New Haven (includes a skatepark!) and Scantlebury Ortodontics in Brooklyn. Even has a Wiki entry telling us it originates most likely in Devon and Cornwall. Wiki given an example from a Parish register of a family with 7 children, each given a different spelling of the surname. (Actually 6 or there's a typo but whatcha gonna do.)

George Case's son/namesake is a former SABR president.

And Freddy Parent was the last surviving player in the first modern World Series (1903).
