Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-12-2020

New York Tribune, November 12, 1920:

A conference of the sixteen club owners of the National and American leagues will be held in Chicago to-day. The result of the deliberations will settle the immediate fate of organized baseball. The club owners, one and all, believe the war will be averted. Fandom, therefore, may await the issue tranquilly.

Ban Johnson’s plan to retain power in the AL and not submit to a commissioner was dead before it even got underway; in addition to keeping the five clubs loyal to him (Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis, Washington, Philadelphia), he needed to be able to poach three minor league clubs. The minor leagues were not having that.

Instead of adding (and this is just me spitballing candidates here) Baltimore, Toronto, and Minneapolis, Johnson’s people floated the idea of adding new teams in New York, Chicago, and Boston to go with the “loyal five”, but that would have been nearly impossible. They had nowhere to play, no fans, no financial backing, and no players. Apart from that, they were in good shape.

Pretty solid Birthday Team today, but not much in center field. Truth be told, they might be better off with Carl Mays (.268/.313/.350 career) playing every day in the outfield when he isn't pitching.

C: Jody Davis (15.8 WAR)
1B: Bruce Bochte (19.4 WAR)
2B: Homer Bush (3.0 WAR)
3B: Donnie Hill (5.1 WAR)
SS: Greg Gagne (26.3 WAR)
LF: Marcell Ozuna (20.8 WAR)
CF: Gary Thurman (-2.8 WAR)
RF: Sammy Sosa (58.6 WAR)

SP: Carl Mays (51.1 WAR)
SP: Ed Killian (26.0 WAR)
SP: Mike Leake (16.9 WAR)
SP: Charlie Morton (8.0 WAR)
SP: Matt Strahm (4.5 WAR)
RP: Joe Hoerner (10.1 WAR)

Backup shortstop: Bill Gleason (10.3 WAR)
Not that one: Ben Taylor
Go The Distance: Moonlight Graham
Commissioner: Yushi Uchimura
Writer: Frank Graham
All-American college first baseman, chose football: Steve Bartkowski

People think it was Homer Bailey who brought back the name "Homer" after 70 years away, but it was really Homer Bush.

If the Birthday Team rules only require a player to have made an appearance at a position in the major leagues, maybe you could move Sosa to center and put Donnie Hill in right? Hill played a grand total of one major league inning in right field, but he was a better hitter than Gary Thurman.

Another outfield option might be to put Ozuna in centerfield, and put Hideto Asamura in left field. Asamura is the current Pacific League home run champion, who hit 32 this season for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. He's primarily been a second baseman, but has played 72 games in the outfield in his career (although all were in 2011 and 2012). He's been one of the best players in NPB over the past decade, a seven-time All-Star, and five time Best Nine selection. He's won Golden Gloves at 2B and at 1B, and has led the league in RBI twice. His last three seasons, his HR totals have been 32-33-32. His lifetime line is .284/.362/.471, with 212 HR, and he's only 30 today, so he's still in his prime. His 2020 line was .280/.408/.560.

If you want to, Jody had 6 career starts at 1B; Jeff Reed (4.4 WAR) takes over at C (worthy of a bench nod methinks) and Bochte to LF (343 starts).

For a team with no HoFers (though we can asterisk Sammy), this is a solid team.

he needed to be able to poach three minor league clubs. The minor leagues were not having that.

Um, if the AL wanted to put teams in minor league cities, what exactly could the minor leagues have done about it? Complain to the commissioner?

#6 I think you overestimating the relative power of the majors to the minors in 1920. They'd have competed against the new entries -- almost certainly successfully.

Could he have recruited the team? 20 years before, maybe. But a lot of people wanted nothing to do with the man Johnson was in 1920.
