Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-13-2020

Pittsburgh Press, November 13, 1920:

Federal Judge K.M. Landis today began his work as “big umpire” of organized baseball.

Sixteen owners of major league baseball clubs after scrapping the 12-club league proposal signed terms of peace and unanimously offered Judge Landis the control of baseball affairs for seven years at an annual salary of $42,500. He accepted. Judge Landis will not resign from the bench.

Good side gig if you can get it.

A couple of players are badly out of position on today's Birthday Team. Wes Parker has a reputation as a magnificent defensive first baseman, but he's in right because Steve Bilko played three career games in the outfield. Johnny Kling is a catcher playing left field because Laird played a total of four career innings as an outfielder.

C: Gerald Laird (6.5 WAR)
1B: Steve Bilko (4.9 WAR)
2B: Alex Kampouris (6.6 WAR)
3B: John Kroner (0.2 WAR)
SS: Asdrubal Cabrera (28.9 WAR)
LF/Manager: Johnny Kling (29.0 WAR)
CF: Josh Devore (3.0 WAR)
RF: Wes Parker (22.9 WAR)

SP: Mel Stottlemyre Sr. (43.1 WAR)
SP: Pat Hentgen (32.6 WAR)
SP: Dan Petry (17.1 WAR)
SP: Ted Wilks (16.3 WAR)
SP: Wade Miley (10.6 WAR)
RP: Gene Garber (16.7 WAR)

Notable Negro Leagues player, maybe better than Bilko and would be an okay choice as an everyday 1B: Buck O'Neil
Frontier League success story: Jason Simontacchi
Fun names: Podge Weihe, Nick Goulish

Gail Kim is the new GM of the Marlins. Pretty cool.

Kim Ng. Gail Kim appears to be a retired wrestler, which would be even cooler.

Is that actually the top decision-maker for the Marlins? I think it is.

That's nice. She's been interviewing for these positions for seems like 30 years now. Good that she finally got one.

Ng becomes the first woman and first Asian-American GM, just one day after the Angels hired the first Minasian-American GM.

Congrats to Ms. Ng.

She's the first GM of East Asian descent. Farhan Zaidi is of Pakistani heritage (which would count as Asian under the Census).

Jesus. I am sorry.

I think so. Their COO is also a woman (Caroline O'Connor).

Fair point.

Asia is too large. Please remove three nations.

PS. I am not a crackpot.

The Marlins have been described as having a ‘collaborative’ decision-making process, which is not to say that Ng will have a lesser role than her predecessor. The CEO (Jeter) is probably the top-decision maker on some matters, and may be more involved on the baseball side than some who hold the position elsewhere. Of course, the principal owner (Bruce Sherman) will be the final decision-maker on what he cares to exert his authority on.

He's the first Asian-Canadian GM.

annual salary of $42,500.

About $550,000 in today's $, indeed not a bad side gig though I assume Manfred is paid substantially more for his full-time efforts.

annual salary of $42,500.
Landis had a $50,000 salary as Commissioner, but for the year plus that he remained on the bench his compensation was reduced by his $7,500 Federal District Court Judge salary. There was considerable criticism of Landis’ dual roles by some in Congress and the legal community, so not surprising it didn’t last long.
