Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-15-2019

El Paso Herald, November 15, 1919:

Rumors That World Series Was Fixed Will Not Down

[New York Evening Mail writer] James P. Sinnott, known in sporting circles as “Skipper,” says: “The rumors of crookedness in connection with the recent world’s series are cropping up again. The story hinted at in Chicago when the last game between the White Sox and Reds had been played, in which the inference was drawn that gamblers had tampered with Chicago players, is once more going the rounds.”

There is an old adage that “where there is smoke there must be fire.” Yet those who understand the general trend of suspicion that seems to follow in the wake of all big sporting events these days, and who believe in the integrity of the national pastime, will be slow to believe that the world’s series of 1919 was not decided upon its merits.
...
So far as the world’s series of 1919 is concerned nothing showed upon the surface to indicate that the Cincinnati Reds were not a better team than the Chicago White Sox. And I think they were and are the better team, no matter how many gamblers tried to, or did, stiffen certain Chicago players.

Nah, I wouldn’t worry about it. I think it was on the level.

When I built the roster for the November 15 Birthday Team a few years ago, I was certain my database was screwy. It was not. This is what we have to work with.

It's not pretty.

LF: Maurice Van Robays (2.5 WAR)
CF: Gus Bell (15.4 WAR)
RF: Milt Byrnes (7.1 WAR)

SP: Dylan Bundy (6.8 WAR)
SP: Fred Breining (5.1 WAR)

Trevor Story, No. 27, turns 27 today, and is already the best player on his birthday team.

If Story puts up a borderline HoF career, he could out-WAR the rest of the team combined.

52 WAR would do it.

CF: Gus Bell (15.4 WAR)

I would have assumed he'd have much more lifetime WAR, but BRef shows he ended up 24.8 oWAR but -12.4 dWAR. I don't remember him being THAT bad of a fielder

Yep, my team might be the worst. Trevor Story has now taken the WAR lead after 3 1/2 years in the majors. I thought Dylan Bundy would be our ace, but it's still Pat Ragan, #2/3 starter on the 1910-1914 Casey Stengel/Zack Wheat Brooklyn Dodgers team, who was waived before they became good.

Either David or Mike Bell have kids who might make MLB? Having a fourth-gen player would be pretty cool.

Yep, my team might be the worst.
I see what you did there. Happy birthday, Crispix!

The Macho Man is listed as 6-1 195...methinks he added some additional muscle after leaving baseball :)

Maybe they can recruit the center fielder's son?

OK, let's settle this. I fired up my OOTP and created a league with just the 1919 Reds and White Sox, and had them play 154 games.

The winner? Chicago, 88-66. Shoeless Joe won the batting title (.323), while Happy Felsch hit a league-leading 18 dingers (he was the only one in double figures), while Buck Weaver had 97 RBI. Felsch also lead all batters with 7.3 WAR, with the Reds' Edd Roush and Heinie Groh second and third. Chicago had the top three pitchers, too: Williams (9.3 WAR), Cicotte and Kerr.
