Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-18-2020

Hayti [Missouri] Herald, November 18, 1920:

The greatest family in baseball is the Smith family. You can take the Joneses and Burnses and Collinses and Clarkes and Doyles and put them in the field and none could produce as good a team as the Smiths. The Smiths past and present have been represented in baseball thus:

Pitchers—Sherrod, Brooklyn; George, Giants and Phillies, and Frank, White Sox.
Catchers—Harry, Pirates, and Earl, Giants.
First Base—Aleck, Brooklyn.
Second Base—George, Giants of early ‘90s.
Shortstop—Germany, Brooklyn.
Third Base—Red, Braves.
Outfield—Elmer, old, Reds and Pirates; Elmer, Cleveland, and Jack, Cardinals.
Utility—Jimmy and Paul.

Off the top of my head, it seems like the Johnsons and Williamses could be the best now. You’d have to slide Matt Williams over to short, but he came up as a shortstop and played more than 120 games there, so it’s not like he couldn’t handle it. The Jacksons have an incredible outfield (Reggie, Joe, Bo) and a shaky HoF selection at shortstop (Travis) but not much else that moves the needle. Danny, Randy. Grant and Larry.

Johnson: P - Walter, Randy, Syl, Josh; C - Charles; 1B - Cliff; 2B - Davey; 3B - Howard; SS - Ernie; OF - Bob, Lance, Alex
Williams: P - Woody, Stan, Lefty; C - Earl; 1B - Billy; 2B - Jimmy; 3B - Dick; SS - Matt; OF - Ted, Bernie, Ken

A good Birthday Team today, apart from that middle infield defense. If he wanted to, Sheffield could maybe, possibly, battle shortstop to something vaguely resembling a draw. Hemond played quite a bit of second base and played it reasonably well, but was the second-best C/2B of the 1990s.

If you wanted to, you could move Sheff to right, bench Henderson, and play Mauch at shortstop. At the very least, this would happen frequently as a mid-game defensive improvement.

C: Deacon McGuire (24.9 WAR)
1B: David Ortiz (55.3 WAR)
2B: Scott Hemond (1.3 WAR)
3B: Bill Shipke (2.1 WAR)
SS: Gary Sheffield (60.5 WAR)
LF: Roy Sievers (25.5 WAR)
CF: Les Mann (13.9 WAR)
RF: Steve Henderson (11.5 WAR)

SP: Jamie Moyer (49.8 WAR)
SP: Jack Coombs (26.8 WAR)
SP: C.J. Wilson (17.5 WAR)
SP: Dutch Ulrich (8.1 WAR)
SP: Jameson Taillon (8.2 WAR)
RP: Tom Gordon (35.0 WAR)

Manager: Gene Mauch
Umpire: Mark Johnson
Fun names: Charlie Fuchs, Kermit Wahl, Rip Vowinkel, Sterling Slaughter, Ray Shook
Can be sung instead of "Hey, Macarena": Hey, Spike Merena
Not as good a player as his son: Clay Bellinger
Also receiving votes, likely to fall behind his son in career WAR in the next year or two: Dante Bichette

Off the top of my head, it seems like the Johnsons and Williamses could be the best now.
How about the Martinezes?

P - Pedro, Dennis, Ramon J., Tippy, Carlos E.
C - Buck
1B - Tino
2B - Ramon E.
3B - Edgar
SS - Ted, Marty
OF - J.D., Dave, Carmelo, maybe Reginald Martinez Jackson?
DH - Victor
Bench bats - Jose, Carlos A.

The middle infield is terrible, but other than that they're solid.

The Martinezes are a good thought. The Ruths (Babe and 24 randomly selected people named Ruth) and Bondses (Barry, Bobby, and 23 randomly selected people named Bonds) don't quite have the depth to contend though.

The Davises would be pretty good. No Hall of Famers born in the last 150 years, but a lot of good players.

EDIT: Maybe not. The Davises don't have much at 2B, 3B, or P.

The Ruths (Babe and 24 randomly selected people named Ruth)

Let him have the "Babes" too.

The Hernandezes are pretty good on the mound (Felix, Livan, Orlando, Roberto in the rotation and Willie in the pen) and on the dirt (Ramon at C, Keith at 1B, Cesar at 2B, Jose at SS and Kike at 3B), but really weak in the outfield,
   7. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: November 18, 2020 at 11:46 AM (#5989548)
How about the Robinsons? Don't know about depth, but Frank, Jackie, and Brooks is a hell of a start.

Better if you allow it as a last or first name (Cano and Chirinos).

   9. Steve Parris, Je t'aime Posted: November 18, 2020 at 11:59 AM (#5989557)
If you stretch May to its plural, you can get close to a good team:

P - Carl, Rudy, Joe
C - Milt, Jerry
1B - Brothers Lee and Carlos
3B - Lee (Maye) (mostly an OF, a few games at 3B)
OF - Willie, Dave, Derrick

Alas, the middle infield. Would be an adventure to see Carlos at SS.

Pitching is still a disaster, I think. Don is the only one I can think of.

Jacksons might also be intriguing. Reggie, Shoeless Joe, Travis, Danny, Austin, Michael...

Can you get Joe Dimaggio in via "Mrs."?

Clearly you did not collect baseball cards in the late '80s. Ron, two Jeffs...

Johnson (4) and Robinson (4) have the most hall of famers among last names (although the Robinsons include Wilber as a manager, and the Johnsons include Ban & Judy)

@9: Willie played SS for one inning. I'm confident he'd be better than Carlos.

Seung-Yuop Lee hit 626 home runs between the KBO and NPB. He was mainly a first baseman, but played some outfield. He holds the KBO career record with 467. including seasons of 56 (the KBO season record) and 54. In NPB, he hit 159, including 41 for the Yomiuri Giants in 2003.

What's all this name talk? The birthday team is a mini 2004 ALCS reunion (Ortiz, Sheffield, Gordon)!
   19. Walt Davis Posted: November 18, 2020 at 04:14 PM (#5989627)
Nobody's re-tackled the Smith team. I look at the team in the intro and ... not exactly a killer lineup.

I don't have time but a starter: Ozzie, Reggie, Lonnie, Seth, Hal, Lee, about a million relievers fittingly enough, Dwight Sr and Jr, and the names leader in the clubhouse Phenomenal. At first glance, looks thin in the infield and the rotation.

Team Rodriguez:

C - Ivan
Backup C - Ellie
1B/Util/Water Cooler Adversary - Sean
2B - Luis
3B - Aurelio
SS/Mascot - Alex
OF - Henry, Yorman, John
SP - Eduardo (Bos), Wandy, Frankie, Jose Rodriguez Lima
Swingman - Eduardo (Mil '70s)
Parade of anonymous RP - Fernando, Paco, Joely, Felix, Henry A., Richard, Rich, Ricardo, the other non-KRod Francisco who also pitched for the Angels in 2010-11 (all of these are real guys - and the list goes on)
Closer - Francisco

Ridiculously deep bullpen, but the outfield depth is sorely lacking.

Team Perez also struggles in the OF:

C - Salvador
Backup C - Eddie
1B - Tony
2B - Marty
3B - Eduardo
SS - Neifi F'ing
OF - Timo, Robert, Fernando
Util - Hernan
SP - Pascual, Melido, Martin, Carlos, Odalis
RP - Oliver, Chris, Mike, Rafael, Yorkis, Juan, Cionel

Team Gonzalez/s:

C - Mike (1920s)
Backup C - Wiki
1B - Adrian
2B - Erik, Rene
SS - Alex (whichever)
3B - Alex (the other one)
OF - Carlos, Juan, Luis, Tony
Util - Marwin

RP - Mike

I’d put a team of players whose names are unique to major league baseball against any of the single name teams.

Starters: Bench, Gehrig, Hornsby, Santo, Appling, Ruth, Speaker, and Mantle.

Reserves: Aparicio, Fisk, Foxx, Frisch, Kaline, Lajoie, Musial, Zobrist, and Yastrzemski.

Pitchers: Blyleven, Carlton, Eckersley, Koufax, Mussina, Newhouser, Seaver, and Spahn.

I think this team would be competitive with a team picked from all the other players that have played in MLB, but maybe not.
   24. Crispix Attacksel Rios Posted: November 19, 2020 at 12:49 PM (#5989937)
That's an interesting list. Never thought of doing that before.

Just one problem, there's another Yastrzemski now!

You’re right! I made the list several years ago. I checked several of the best players, but missed Yastrzemski.
