Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-27-2019

Columbus Dispatch, November 27, 1919:

Dick Wants Job

Dick Hoblitzel, former first baseman of the Boston Red Sox, has filed an application with the Akron Exhibition Co. to manage Akron’s club in the International league next season. Hoblitzel is now a first lieutenant in the army but expects to receive his discharge long before the playing season opens.

This is a headline that worked 100 years ago today, and again in 2012 when I got laid off.

A great catcher and a league MVP at shortstop, but otherwise a pretty blah Birthday Team. Ace starter Bullet Joe Bush had 37.4 career WAR, but just 2.6 WAA. Most of his value came from being consistently decent for a really long time.

C: Ivan Rodriguez (68.7 WAR)
1B: Randy Milligan (13.5 WAR)
2B: Bob Sheldon (0.3 WAR)
3B: Billy Moran (3.1 WAR)
SS: Jimmy Rollins (46.3 WAR)
LF: Eloy Jimenez (1.4 WAR)
CF: Bradley Zimmer (1.3 WAR)
RF: Willie Bloomquist (1.6 WAR)

SP: Bullet Joe Bush (37.3 WAR)
SP: Johnny Schmitz (22.4 WAR)
SP: Dave Giusti (18.8 WAR)
SP: Dan Spillner (9.1 WAR)
SP: Marty O'Toole (3.9 WAR)
RP: Al Raffo (0.7 WAR)

Manager/Backup C: Mike Scioscia (26.1 WAR)
Not that one: Jimmy Hart

I hope Dick got the job and discharge he wanted.

I hadn't heard of Bush before, but I probably should have. He was traded with Sad Sam Jones from Boston to New York before 1922 and had three pretty solid seasons there. Overall from 1921-24, he threw 1,037 innings, won 78 games, and put up 18 pitching WAR. He also hit .316 those years, giving him another 4 WAR.

Assuming this is bWAR, I suspect there's some miscounting going on here. As a pitcher he had 31.6 WAR/2.5 WAA. As a batter, he had 5.7/5.4(!!). Add it up, he has 37.3 WAR and 7.9 WAA.

He really had a prime that was pretty good. 1916-1924 (including a presumably injury-shortened 1919 and an off-year in 1920) he had 29.4 pitching WAR and 9.7 WAA. That means his pitching WAR7 (1916-1918, 1921-1924) was 28.8, with a WAA of 11.5 over those same 7 seasons, or 33.5 WAR7/16 WAA7 if you include his hitting.

Unfortunately, he was decidedly below average outside of that seven-season prime, compiling 2.3 pitching WAR/ -9 WAA in his 10 other seasons combined, or overall of 3.8 WAR/-8.1 WAA.

Average it all together and you get a pitcher with a 100 ERA+ on the nose and a .516 w%. But for a decent chunk of time there, he really earned that nickname.

What's weird about Bush is that he was a terrible hitter for the A's (.166/.189/.222), but something changed immediately (did Babe Ruth play a part?) when he joined the Red Sox; he had a 93 OPS+ from that point onward.

Also, this nugget from Bush's SABR bio:
Missoula won the Gladsome Rug, emblematic of the Union Association championship, with an 83-51 record.
Those were the days! What would the winning team do with a rug? And why can't I get one? An Amazon search for "gladsome rug" returns zero results.

Bush went 26-16 for that team.

"Dick," "discharge," "got laid," "Bush," and "Babe" all appear on this page now. Also "Randy," "Willie," and "(O')Tool(e)." There are going to be some disappointed search engines.
