Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-21-2011

Eugene Register-Guard, December 21, 1911:

OUTLAW LEAGUE TO BE FORMED IN EASTERN CITIES

According to an announcement here, plans are being perfected for the establishment of a new “outlaw” baseball league, to have clubs in Brooklyn, Newark, Paterson, Reading, Washington, Baltimore, and Richmond.

The outlaw league in question was the United States League, which lasted about a month, was populated by has-beens and never-will-bes, and was Bugs Raymond’s last stop in pro baseball.

Bad news Dan - you missed the biggest birthday of all, for - as noted today at THT - a Hall of Fame catcher turns 100 years old today.

The link gives a whole litany of events celebrating their anniversary today, including: Boston signing Bobby Jenks, Boston lands Johnny Damon, Baltimore gets Roberto ALomar, Marge Schott becomes Reds owner, San Diego signs the Great Satan, Jimmy Wynn is stabbed by his wife, and the Cubs announce their College of Coaches idea.

EDITED to add the link.

Nino Bongiovanni?

1970 Houston Astros star centerfielder Jimmy Wynn is stabbed by his wife in a domestic dispute. He will need abdominal surgery but will start the season.

So that's why his 1971 was so dreadful. I never knew.

Supposedly, the Cubs are going to trade Sean Marshall to the Reds for Travis Wood. That seems off to me since Marshall is very good and Wood isn't.

And they're going to spend the money they save by dealing Marshall on Reed Johnson.

Aaargh. Serves me right for only checking bb-ref's list of major leaguers.

The Cubs are acquiring Wood and Johnson? Are they sure they hired Theo Epstein and not Beavis?

Marshall can become a free agent after 2012, he is potentially replaceable by James Russell, and Wood's under club control for at least five more years. Wood's also better than he showed in 2011, and the Cubs would be getting other prospects with Wood. I like this deal.

3B Andy LaRoche to CLE

Excellent role player signing. Fills the "Jeff Manto Memorial Useless Third Baseman Roster Spot" previously held by Jack Hannahan, Aaron Boone, Jayson Nix, Alvaro Espinoza, Andy Marte, Greg LaRocca, Bill Selby, and Tom Brookens.

You'll know for sure if they try to grab Wang.

Wang is already signed. They might have to turn their interest to Harden.

Anyone got any good baseball-related podcasts they can recommend? Already listen to Posnanski, Jonah Keri and Rany Jazeryli. Anything baseball related, even tangentially so.

And if you want, recommend other good podcasts, preferably related to politics, culture, films, food, or travel.

Sean Marshall is not potentially replaced by James Russell. Russell is strictly a LOOGY.
   16. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: December 21, 2011 at 09:47 PM (#4021437)
Speaking of LOOGYs, Royals sign Jose Mijares.
   17. Crispix Attacksel Rios Posted: December 21, 2011 at 09:51 PM (#4021440)
LOOOGY. The extra O is for Obese.

Also Russell is, as the kids say, not good.

But Wood looks like a pretty decent prospect and there's more in the deal so I'm OK with that move. The Reds are obviously looking at weakened StL and Milw teams and going for it. Good for them.
