Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-11-2019

Pittsburgh Press, December 11, 1919:

Joe McCarthy, veteran second baseman of the Louisville American association baseball club, has been signed to manage the Colonels next year, according to a telegram from Business Manager William Neale, who is in New York. McCarthy is ranked as one of the best players in the association and has been with Louisville five years.

Ho-hum. Just another case of a guy getting a manager job because he’s a good player. There’s no chance McCarthy ever amounts to anything as a manager.

A good pitching staff on today's Birthday Team, but not much in the infield.

If you were so inclined, you could get more WAR into the starting lineup by moving Derek Bell to third base and playing Thomas Howard in center. But if you remember what Derek Bell was like as a third baseman, you'd know what an awful idea that would be. Also, truth be told, I like Andy Tracy and I'm the guy making the lineups.

C: Art Wilson (14.5 WAR)
1B: Jay Bell (37.2 WAR)
2B: Johnny O'Brien (-0.1 WAR)
3B/Punter: Andy Tracy (-0.5 WAR)
SS: Rob Andrews (0.9 WAR)
LF: Lee Maye (15.7 WAR)
CF: Derek Bell (13.1 WAR)
RF: Bill Nicholson (41.8 WAR)

SP: Old Hoss Radbourn (75.4 WAR)
SP: Fred Toney (25.7 WAR)
SP: Hal Brown (17.5 WAR)
SP: Slim Harriss (13.9 WAR)
SP: Joe Blanton (11.8 WAR)
RP: Mike Henneman (12.9 WAR)

Johnny's Twin Brother: Eddie O'Brien (-1.9 WAR)

since i use the dugout as a dumping ground for news updates and my brief thoughts on generally obscure players...

tyler heineman, a 28 year old switch hitting (read: lefty) minor league free agent backstop who made his big league debut last season likely merits a big league deal with a team and a backup spot. decent defender (avg arm, avg framer, avg in general back there) had a career year with the bat in aaa (ops+ 138), but more generally uses solid bat control / plate discipline to do a little bit of everything at the bat. not exciting (steamer projects an ops+ of 81 this year), but useful and you'll get to own his peak for cheap.

He can't be worse than Tomas Nido.

When Radbourn was Gerrit Cole's age, he was coming off a 60-12, 678 IP, 19.1 WAR season.

Might be signing MLB’s 1st $1B contract if he had done that last year.

Browsing Baseball Think Factory while at work is my version of "Operation Shutdown".

Hawk Harrelson led me to listen to White Sox games on the radio. I always felt bad for his partners

73 starts and 73 complete games for Old Hoss that year

There was a three-game World's Series in 1884, and Hoss started, completed, and won all three games. Two of the games were shortened, though, so he pitched 22 total innings.

Tim Keefe pitched complete game losses in the first two games and umpired the third one.

He could sing the National Anthem, too.

Treinen to LAD 1/10
Lindblom deal has bonuses that can roughly double the value of the deal

The A's should have been able to get at least a bag of balls for Treinen.
