Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-12-2019

Columbus Dispatch, December 12, 1919:

Because of the claim of officials of the New York National league club that the New York American league club management flooded the Polo Grounds with passes last year in an effort to give the impression that the Yanks were playing to as many people as the Giants, there is grave doubt whether the Highlanders will find the Polo Grounds available for their use after 1920.

That seems like an extremely petty thing to get mad about, but *shrug*.

Not a deep Birthday Team today. The O-Dog, Stormin' Gorman, and a few pitchers. But then you're down to Ralph Garr and Phenomenal Smith.

1B: Garrett Atkins (4.0 WAR)
2B: Orlando Hudson (30.9 WAR)
3B: Pedro Gonzalez (1.4 WAR)
SS: Pee-Wee Wanninger (-2.0 WAR)
LF: Ralph Garr (14.8 WAR)
CF: Gorman Thomas (19.8 WAR)
RF: Charlie Blackwell (Negro Leagues)

SP: Ervin Santana (25.9 WAR)
SP: Tully Sparks (20.2 WAR)
SP: Luis Castillo (8.5 WAR)
SP: Phenomenal Smith (7.7 WAR)
SP: Bob Carpenter (2.6 WAR)
RP: Steve Farr (18.1 WAR)

Fun names: Bugs Reisigl, Flea Clifton, Redleg Snyder, Mike Kickham
Not that one or that one: Jim Brown
Not that one: Derrell Griffith

Another birthday boy, Alonzo Powell, went to Japan and had a good career of 7 years or so. He hit about .340 over a three-year period.

Rick Porcello to the Mets.

Alonzo Powell was a favorite of mine as a kid, which says something about the kind of kid that I was.

Rule 5 draft about to start... BA projects Rony Garcia to DET, Brandon Bailey to BAL.

But then you're down to Ralph Garr

The only former batting title winners with fewer career WAR than Garr (14.8):

1. Alex Johnson (1970, with 3.7 of his career 9.9 WAR). Johnson's career WAR was depressed by -10.6 dWAR.
2. Tim Anderson (2019, with 4.0 of his career 10.2 WAR). Still active, won't be on this list for long.
3. Debs Garms (1940, with 3.5 of his career 11.0 WAR, back when you could win a batting title with just 385 PA)
4. Dee Gordon (2015, with 5.1 of his career 12.1 career WAR). Still active, but has potential for negative WAR going forward
5. Lew Fonseca (1929, with 5.5 of his career 13.9 WAR). Fonseca only had 6 seasons with at least 300 PA, but hit at least .312 in 5 of them.

In looking down the list of batting leaders, there are very few one-year flukes; almost all are (at worst) good players who had decent careers, and mostly star-type players to all-time-great players.

Garret Atkins had a 5 WAR season, and then never had another good year. I wonder what that feels like. Must be very depressing.

Atkins was not noted for the strength of his effort. That one good year, though, was really good: .329/.409/.556 with positive defensive WAR at third base is impressive even for Coors Field.

He made $16M, so maybe he got as much out of the game as he needed to get out of it.
   9. Itchy Row Posted: December 12, 2019 at 12:14 PM (#5908137)
After his really good year, Atkins's H, HR, RBI, BA, OBP, and SLG all declined every year for the rest of his career, 2006-2010.

I hope JJ Cooper is alright because he isn't tweeting out Rule 5 selections pick-by-pick.
   11. Itchy Row Posted: December 12, 2019 at 12:25 PM (#5908148)
The Yankees are bringing Brett Gardner back for $12.5M. With one more WAR, he'll move into 24th on the Yankees list and knock Earle Combs off the bb-ref franchise page.

It still must be really fun to be awesome at baseball.

Atkins signed a minor league contract to go to spring training with the Pirates in 2011. He retired when he got cut before opening day. Based on his Twitter feed, he spends his time watching baseball and football now.

Hard work too though, and so competitive. Some guys might start sinking like a stone as soon as they stop putting in the extra work.

Peraza to BOS for 3m (I think there's also incentives)

They also signed Martin Perez for 6m (& a t-opt for 6.25m for ‘21)
