Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-20-2019

Pittsburgh Press, December 20, 1919:

“The Redsox players signed for more than one year will have to live up to their contracts,” declares Manager Ed Barrow.
...
“If the club submitted to Ruth every time he balked the morale of the players would be endangered and eventually result in the Sox being a one-man team…I don’t believe that Owner Frazee will have any trouble with the players. Neither Frazee nor I have heard from Ruth regarding the 1920 season, and the stories about him being a holdout may not be true…I would not be surprised, however, if Ruth did ask for more money.”
...
“If Ruth is a man of his word, he will have to play for the figures on his contract, which I think are perfectly fair.”

...to which Frazee replied “Hold my sheet music and watch this.”

Elsewhere in the news 100 years ago today, the Yankees’ lawyer produces a letter allegedly written by Ban Johnson in which the AL President says the “New York club must be driven out of baseball.” The lawyer claimed Johnson was trying to conspire with the Giants to kick the Yankees out of the Polo Grounds and render them homeless.

A good Birthday Team today. The pitching staff is a bit thin but the starting lineup is excellent, the bench is strong, and the front office knows what it's doing.

"Aubrey Huff" is an anagram of "A Huffy Rube", which is a rare instance of a name anagram that perfectly describes the person.

Was he huffy? I listened to him a few times on Bay Area sports radio. He may have been a rube, but he was jovial and very very open about his own laziness and the way he tried to abuse the prescription drugs policy.

Huff recently implied that he would take up arms against the United States if certain political candidates won certain elections.

I liked Huff as a player but Dan isn't wrong - Huff has said a bunch of dumb/gross things.

Huff did seem like a boor and an ass. I just appreciated his candor. It was offered in more of a breezy, devil-may-care way than a self-important Schillingesque shock jock way.

Huff is training his sons how to murder people because he thinks it will be necessary if Bernie Sanders wins.

The lawyer claimed Johnson was trying to conspire with the Giants to kick the Yankees out of the Polo Grounds and render them homeless.

Let the New York franchise leave the American League? Thank goodness the National League never let that happen!

"Aubrey Huff" is an anagram of "A Huffy Rube", which is a rare instance of a name anagram that perfectly describes the person.

Au contraire! Anagrams always reveal the truth!

Jim Morrison = Mr. Mojo Risin'
Richard Milhous Nixon = Hush, nix! Criminal odor!
George Bush = He bugs Gore.
William Jefferson Clinton = Jilts nice women, in for fall.
Clint Eastwood = Old West action.

and, of course,

Elvis = lives.

Au contraire, encore! Gamble slashed 274/396/460/856 with RISP, 265/356/454/811 for his career!

He's also the only retired player whose RBI equals the number of the beast.

So, on the 100th anniversary of the Babe Ruth trade, the Red Sox will commemorate the occasion by trading Mookie Betts? Maybe they can put both players on a bobblehead - that should appease the fans.

Dan, I don’t know if you are taking off for the rest of the year, regardless, thank you for the Primer Dugout. Some days it’s the only thread I have time for.

By my quick and dirty calculations there have been 1,482 players in MLB history (out of 19,690 total) with a career WAR of 20 of higher. In other words, each Birthday Team should average about four players at that level. When Fred Merkle, with 19.8 career WAR, is today's 11th-best player, you've officially got a great Birthday Team. Throw in an inner-circle front office guy like Branch Rickey, it might even be among the top five.

And thanks, Dan, for your work all year.

Tigers sign the right side of an infield, each for 1/6.1m (Cron, Schoop).

MLB and the mlbua (ump union) tentatively agree to a 5 year deal (thru ‘24).
