Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-28-2020

Washington Times, December 28, 1920:

In this season of Santa Claus celebrations one is perforce brought face to face with many manifestations of the old fellow with the long whiskers and the reindeer, the sound of whose bells has sent shuddering to bed so many kids through all these long past generations. Baseball fans with any memory whatever must recognize in the trim figure of Harry H. Frazee, president of the Boston American League Club, the private Santa Claus for the New York Yankees.
...
First and foremost, of course, stands the deal that sent Babe Ruth to the New York Club.
...
Now for the latest trade, one which has quite broken the camel’s back with Boston fans. Wally Schang, one of the three best catchers in baseball; Waite Hoyt, a young and promising pitcher; Mike McNally, a first class utility man, and Harry Harper, a fair left-hand pitcher have been turned over to the Yankees in exchange for “Muddy” Ruel, another second string receiver, Del Pratt, a creaking veteran infielder who is supposed to have retired with the recent season; Sam Vick, a “bust” as a major league outfielder, and Herb Thormahlen, a fair southpaw pitcher. Also, according to Boston writers, Frazee received a check for $25,000.

That’s some bad trade, Harry.

Heck of a pitching staff on today's Birthday Team. Carl Willis wasn't really a starting pitcher, but got a couple of starts in his rookie season and later in his career spent a year as a sixth starter/swingman in the minors.

Wow, Ted Lyons went into military service at age 41. Must have been a volunteer.

If he had stayed, he probably could have gotten to 300 wins feasting on the weakened league. He had a 171 ERA+ in 1942 at 41, and a 148 in limited time in 1946 at age 45.

Don't know what happened to the link here, but there's a weird redirect/security notice that requests that you allow an add-on that changes your default web browser.

If you hover over the link you see an extra "h" at the beginning of "https" that may be the offending item...

#1 Hope you don't mind. Fixed the link #3 mentioned.

Yup [SABR bio]:

In 1942, his 20th season in the majors, the 41-year-old completed all 20 of his starts, going 14-6 with a league-best 2.10 ERA. Then he joined the Marine Corps. He was too old for the military draft, but he was single without dependents. While he made no patriotic speeches about his decision to enlist, he had seen fellow players who had families sign up to do their part for the war effort...

Contemporary accounts indicate that Lyons spent a fairly comfortable war serving as a physical fitness instructor while pitching for and managing Marine Air Corps baseball teams. Late in 1944 he joined service all-star teams made up mostly of major leaguers, including Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio, that sailed to the Pacific to entertain the troops. After he faced DiMaggio in one of the games, he complained, “I left the country to get away from DiMaggio, and there he was.”

SABR also has a story online about his Sunday starter schedule.
