Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-4-2019

Tucumcari [New Mexico] News, December 4, 1919:

There have been many freak plays this season at the Polo ground, but one that occurred in the final game of the season between the Giants and Pirates was one for the book. It happened in the seventh inning. Schmidt, the Pittsburgh catcher, was at bat. He hit a grounder sharply at Zimmerman. Heinie fielded the ball cleanly, but noticed that Schmidt did not run to first. Instead, the visiting backstop was rapping his bat on the ground to see if it had been broken by the blow. So Zim tossed the ball to Fletcher. Fletcher relayed it to Frisch and Frisch passed it to Chase, retiring Schmidt at first base. Schmidt’s bat had been fractured at the handle.

It was your standard run of the mill 5-6-4-3 groundout. Presumably it happened in this game.

Shano Collins was the only player who started the first game of the 1919 World Series for the White Sox who didn't end up either banished for life or elected to the Hall of Fame. Congratulations, Shano!

Rule 5 draft isn't for another 8 days, but I've got to think that the Brewers' Zach Brown will be taken, absent injuries I'm unaware of. He was bad in AAA (5.79 ERA) and his k rate has dipped below what I'm okay with, but he's shown three average or better pitches in the past and could profile in the pen or rotation going forward.

Also superprospect David Green's 59th birthday.

Carlos Gomez has 24.9 WAR in his 1461 games as a hitter and fielder but his one pitching appearance (five batters faced: four walks, two balks, one out, and three runs) costs him .1 WAR. Four of his 21 pitches were strikes.
   6. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: December 04, 2019 at 02:18 PM (#5905626)

Zach Wheeler to PHI, Cole Hamels to ATL

Owen's dad and his uncle played pro ball, but neither one could slip through the tight clenches of the minor leagues and into a major league uniform.

His uncle was a pretty decent lefty reliever who made it to AAA. It's too bad he never got the call - Sharts the LOOGY would have been superb.

Zach Wheeler to PHI,
5 years, $118 million. That's stupid money, all right. Well, it'll make the Fangraphs folks happy.

Wheeler turned down a larger offer from the Chicago White Sox that was in excess of $120 million, sources told Passan.
Getting rejected will be the best transaction the Sox make this year.
