Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-6-2019

Pittsburgh Press, December 6, 1919:

Connie Mack, boss of the Athletics, who jumped into the American league fight with a verbal assault on the New York club, has received a broadside from Col. Huston, part owner of the Yankees.

Among other things Mack said the Yankees were in a poor position to start another league as they didn’t have a park to play in. Among other things, in answering him, Huston said: “We have a team and no park, but the Athletics are not that well off. They have a park and no team.”

Zing!

A good Birthday Team today. The only real weakness is the back end of the starting rotation.

C: Gus Niarhos (3.7 WAR)
1B: Stan Hack (52.6 WAR)
2B: Tony Lazzeri (50.0 WAR)
3B: Harry Wolverton (11.4 WAR)
SS/Manager: Larry Bowa (22.8 WAR)
LF: Gary Ward (17.7 WAR)
CF: Adam Eaton (19.0 WAR)
RF: Lance Blankenship (6.7 WAR)

SP: Kevin Appier (54.5 WAR)
SP: Steve Bedrosian (14.5 WAR)
SP: Jose Contreras (13.1 WAR)
SP: Mike Parrott (2.0 WAR)
SP: Kevin Campbell (0.5 WAR)
RP: Jason Bulger (0.7 WAR)

Disastrous MLB debut: Mike Mayers (-1.6 WAR)
Fun names: Tun Berger, Turkey Tyson, Adam Hyzdu, Hack Eibel, Hap Morse
Tragic story: Jay Dahl (-0.4 WAR)
Umpire: Jocko Conlan

I don't remember hearing of Col. Huston, but he owned the Yankees with Jacob Ruppert from 1915 to 1922. Apparently his full name was Tillinghast L'Hommedieu Huston.

Stan Hack led the NL in steals twice, with 16 and 17 SBs. Why was the stolen base game so lame at the time?

Huh? The Yankees were trying to start a new league in 1919? Why have I never heard of this?
