Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-8-2020

Washington Herald, December 8, 1920:

Federal Judge K.M. Landis, head of organized baseball, would make no comment for publication [last night] on the charge that copies of all the evidence presented to the grand jury in its inquiry into the baseball gambling conspiracy and scandal had been removed from the State Attorney’s office.

The complaint was made to Landis by Ban B. Johnson, president of the American League.

“This is one of the biggest explosions in baseball and will develop into one of the worst scandals yet exposed,” Johnson said just before he was the judge [yesterday] afternoon.

I understand and agree with the need for grand jury testimony to remain sealed, but it seems weird and a bit suspicious that Ban Johnson is so upset. It’s like he’s trying to hide something over and above just wanting the legal system to work as intended.

For what it’s worth, the outgoing State’s Attorney, Maclay Hoyne, says he had copies made in order to add them to the files of relevant cases.

Vernon Wells and Reed Johnson, together again, reliving all those 3rd place finishes (and a 5th & 2nd as well)

Brinkman, the backup infielder got MVP votes in 2 seasons, and a total of 69 vote points. A 9th place finish with a .203 batting average and 59 OPS+ in 1972. I remember classifying him in the "crud" category in my 1973 baseball cards because of that batting average.

Compare with potential future hall of famer Vizquel, with total of 3 vote points in the one season he received votes.

Also, Tim Foli can provide "crud" at several positions if someone gets injured.

Hey, they formed 2/3rds (or 2/4, I suppose is more accurate) of an outfield that was the best in baseball in 2006 by 5 bWAA!

Toronto's outfield was: LF 2.0 WAA (6th), CF 4.2 WAA (2nd, 2 wins behind Beltran in NY), RF 3.1 WAA (1st), total 9.3 WAA.

Second was Cleveland at 4.4, followed by San Diego at 3.8, Washington at 3.5, then the Mets at 3.2 (6.3 of which is from Beltran and whatever backup CFs they used)

I'm not sure what was going on, but Jays outfielders hit .306/.371/.510 that year:

Frank Catalanotto .300/.376/.439, 111 OPS+, 1.8 bWAR, 0.0 bWAA
Vernon Wells .303/.357/.542, 129 OPS+, 6.2 WAR/3.9 WAA
Alex Rios .302/.349/.516, 120+, 4.6 WAR/2.9 WAA
Reed Johnson .319/.390/.479, 124+, 5.1 WAR/3.3 WAA.

Even Eric Hinske hit .264/.353/.513, 121+, 1.0 WAR, 0.2 WAA as a DH/backup RF before he was traded. What a fun team that was to watch.
