Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-18-2012

St. Joseph News-Press, January 18, 1912:

A bill that will cause much excitement in the ranks of baseball men is to be introduced in the New York state legislature by Senator James J. Frawley…It is Senator Frawley’s plan to tax the gross receipts of baseball clubs exceeding a certain limit, the money thus collected to be turned over to the playgrounds in the leading cities and towns.
...

The officials of the major league clubs have never made public the amount of their gross rceipts, expenditures and profits. There is no doubt, however, that the returns are enormous.

Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

Solid birthday team if they can deal with not being able to use airplanes on road trips.

C: Mike Lieberthal
1B: Charlie Eden
2B: Eddie Moore
3B: Pinky May
SS/Manager: Chuck Cottier
LF: Brady Anderson
CF: Curt Flood
RF: Len Koenecke

SP: Scott McGregor
SP: Carl Morton
SP: Wandy Rodriguez
SP: Michael Pineda
SP: Bill Sampen
RP: Mike Fornieles

Gunning for Pinky May's job: Brett Lawrie
Not that one: Nolen Richardson
Could be the name of a cartoon cow: Frank Heifer

There's an inexplicable lack of first basemen to choose from. Heifer played 11 career games but is the closest thing to a "real" first baseman this team has. I just went ahead and used Eden at first instead, as he had a multi-season career, hit well, and made a handful of appearances at 1B.

The surprising thing to me when I read about Kim is that he's only 33.
