Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 2-20-2019

Pittsburgh Press, February 20, 1919:

Babe Ruth, the big, hard-hitting pitcher-outfielder of the Boston Americans, announces that he is really in earnest about becoming a professional boxer. Ruth announced designs on the heavyweight championship when he saw that Jack Dempsey had been promised at least $27,500 for fighting Jess Willard and that the champion had been assured $100,000. Ruth likes money just two points more than he likes a home run, and that is the last word in liking.

In addition, Ruth is not the most modest of men and he really believes that if he took one healthy swing at the jaw of Jess, the Kansas behemoth would hit the canvas.

Willard was indeed ripe for the picking in 1919, but I can’t imagine the Babe would have been a great boxer. He wasn’t exactly the most disciplined athlete in the world.

A bunch of recent players on today's Birthday Team. A few decades ago, this wouldn't have been a particularly good team.

C: Brian McCann (31.7 WAR)
1B: Tommy Henrich (35.7 WAR)
2B: Jurickson Profar (2.1 WAR)
3B: Frankie Gustine (7.8 WAR)
SS: Charlie Babb (4.0 WAR)
LF: Shane Spencer (4.9 WAR)
CF: Sam Rice (52.7 WAR)
RF: Ryan Sweeney (6.6 WAR)

SP: Justin Verlander (63.4 WAR)
SP: John Donaldson (0.0 WAR, Negro Leagues great)
SP: Livan Hernandez (30.2 WAR)
SP: Bill Gullickson (23.5 WAR)
SP: Clyde Wright (13.2 WAR)
RP: Roy Face (20.6 WAR)

Manager, backup catcher, really good player stuck behind McCann, fun name: Muddy Ruel (18.6 WAR)
Fun names: Suds Sutherland, Boardwalk Brown, Tink Turner, Buck Farmer, Jim Toy

Frankie Gustine was, for whatever reason, highly regarded while he was active, getting MVP votes in two years and being named to the All-Star team in three. Even though he was active throughout the entire wartime period, this wasn't the reason for his brief stardom - he got the MVP votes in 1940 and 1946, and was an All-Star 1946-48.

Great article on today's center fielder.

Actor Alec Baldwin is exactly as old as John McGraw was the day he died (22,238 days).

Singer Rihanna is exactly as old as Addie Joss was the day he died (11,323 days).

Anyone who wants to can look up as-old-as items for their own lives (or the lives of their family members) here

MLBTR: 10 Forgotten Free Agents

Here’s a list of the ten most notable free agents who have yet to be connected to specific teams on MLBTR’s pages this winter:

Jose Iglesias, Ervin Santana, Denard Span, Logan Morrison, Carlos Gomez, James Shields, Hanley Ramirez, Jose Bautista, Matt Holliday, Tyler Clippard.

Jose Iglesias, Ervin Santana, Denard Span, Logan Morrison, Carlos Gomez, James Shields, Hanley Ramirez, Jose Bautista, Matt Holliday, Tyler Clippard.

There's a couple of useful players there, but mostly it's old guys who aren't any good anymore. Who the hell would want Hanley Ramirez or Matt Holliday or Logan Morrison?
   7. Jefferson Manship (Dan Lee) Posted: February 20, 2019 at 12:29 PM (#5816796)
Yeah, it's not difficult to figure out why Jose Bautista isn't seeing much interest. A lot of us were flabbergasted when the Braves signed him last year. He turned out to be Not Very Good instead of the expected Hilariously Terrible, but he sure wasn't good. And he's 38.

But I could see teams kicking the tires on Iglesias or Span, maybe tossing Santana an NRI to see what he's got left.

Iglesias is still a useful player, Span might be and guys like Gomez and Morrison were recently good.

There are still several free agents who are a tier below the Boras guys - like Marwin and Gio - who haven't signed, but should be on big league rosters. Players like Josh Harrison, Bud Norris, Adam Jones, Clay Buchholz, Ryan Madson.

"Who the hell would want Logan Morrison?" You mean the guy who is 31 and hit 38 home runs with a .353 OBP two years ago?

Sure there aren't many top-tier free agents left. But the list above is far, far better than the corresponding list of players who were still free agents at this time 10 years ago. Until very recently, teams had their rosters set by this point. There were no free agents of any quality at all available. If someone like Kyle Lohse was still holding out as March approached it was a big story.

Go Go was such a fun player with the Crew.

Some of those guys make a lot more sense in center field for the Rockies than Ian Desmond does, including Denard Span, Carlos Gomez, and possibly Tyler Clippard.

those also aren't the best players left - rather, the best players without rumors they've aggregated.

the rox could also try tapia?

Bill Gullickson would be on the All-Diabetic Team. Seems like none of the MLB players diagnosed with diabetes during their careers (Ron Santo, Catfish Hunter, I think also Jackie Robinson) played into their forties.

Quick googling adds the following names (I presume many of their diags were after their careers ended): Cobb, Kluszewski, Minoso, Patek, Kranepool, Gedman, Jason Johnson, Dan Reichert)...

Clippard to CLE on a minor league deal, will pay 1.75m should he make the club.

Tyler Clippard:

2008 - WAS
2009 - WAS
2010 - WAS
2011 - WAS
2012 - WAS
2013 - WAS
2014 - WAS
2015 - OAK, NYM
2016 - ARI, NYY
2017 - NYY, CHW, HOU
2018 - TOR
2019 - CLE, ???, ???
   17. Jefferson Manship (Dan Lee) Posted: February 20, 2019 at 01:55 PM (#5816847)
Thumbs up from this CLE fan. Clippard isn't the pitcher he was when he was making All-Star teams, but when you're looking at Neil Ramirez and Jon Edwards being key bullpen pieces, any inexpensive help is good help.

Plus, if he doesn't make the team but chooses to stay in the organization, he'll be a Columbus Clippard.

Josh Harrison to DET, where he’d reportedly play second.

i know he's not popular around here, but i wouldn't have minded hearing what YR had to say about the lead in today. his boxing knowledge is quite impressive.

Yes. The guy who is 31 with exactly 1 good year in his career. Outside of that fluke year, he's 1 win above replacement in over 3000 PA.
