Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 2-22-2019

Pittsburgh Press, February 22, 1919:

Under Charley Herzog and Christy Mathewson, the Cincinnati Reds used the “hit and run” system of play extensively, even though it failed to bring results.
...
Now comes Pat Moran, who says that he does not care very much for the play, and who will use it only when it is plain that it should not be set aside. Pat says it’s a great play when you have the men you can make it, but when you haven’t that kind of players, what’s the use?

Coincidentally (or not), the 1919 Reds won 96 games and the World Series.

Not a strong Birthday Team. Daniel Nava is second in career WAR among position players. Today's team is recommended if you like Mariners and Pilots pitchers.

C: Bill Baker (1.3 WAR)
1B: Casey Kotchman (7.5 WAR)
2B: Kelly Johnson (17.9 WAR)
3B: Russ Johnson (2.6 WAR)
SS: Johnny Lucadello (1.0 WAR)
LF: Daniel Nava (8.3 WAR)
CF: Eric Yelding (-1.7 WAR)
RF: Joe Lefebvre (3.8 WAR)

SP: Clarence Mitchell (23.4 WAR)
SP: Steve Barber (17.3 WAR)
SP: Jumbo McGinnis (8.9 WAR)
SP: German Marquez (8.7 WAR)
SP: Brian Duensing (6.2 WAR)
RP: J.J. Putz (13.1 WAR)
RP: Kazuhiro Sasaki (3.7 WAR)

#####: ##### Tebeau
Fun names: Pat Hilly, Rocky Gale
Fun player: Ryne Duren
Manager: Sparky Anderson
Umpire: Bill Klem

In his last 17 starts last year, German Marquez was 9-3 with a 2.47 ERA, and hit .303. People are excited about that Rockies rotation.

And Jon Gray is in the best shape of his life! Supposedly added 25 lbs of muscle.

Today's starting lineup would have been a good Triple A lineup back before the farm system.

This is my annual thanks to Dan Lee for doing the Dugout every day, especially through the months where there are no games.

Concur, enthusiastically!

Ervin Santana to the White Sox on a minor league deal ($4.3 million if he makes the team)
Marwin Gonzalez to the Twins on a 2-year $21 million deal

BBRef gives Duren 5.8 WAR (as a pitcher - minus 0.8 as a "batter"), so a bit better than RP#2. He had terrible vision, even with his Coke-bottle bottom eyeglasses. One MiLB scouting report quipped, "Duren could throw the ball through a brick wall, if he could see the wall." His warm-up routine upon entering the game was to throw as hard as he could, in the general direction of home plate. Seeing a rocket launcher firing pitches that hit 10+ feet up the wall behind the plate must've impressed some batters. Had 2 decent seasons in NY before his walk rate began to resemble his IP.

I've seen worse teams. They've got a member of the (Japanese) hall of fame.

Baseball has returned, albeit of the Spring Training variety, with the MLB Network broadcast of A's @ Mariners. Ichiro's 2-RBI an obvious portent of a dominant season.

And I'm working remotely today! Just turned on the game. This makes me happy.

Tim Tebow looks really ####### thick for a baseball player.

The Kieboom brothers are both on the field for the Nationals. Could be an explosive combination if both come through this season.

Sure enough, Spencer Kieboom blasts a 3-run HR.

Hanley Ramirez to CLE (minor league deal)

Agree on Tebow.
