Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 2-26-2019

Seattle Star, February 26, 1919:

The American and National leagues, it is said, have abandoned any idea of organizing independent minor leagues to take care of their surplus players. Some of the major magnates favored it, but the majority thought it inadvisable to antagonize the National Association leagues and elected to make disposition of the surplus by other means.

Presumably, they also realized it would be extremely expensive to build new leagues from the ground up.

A good Birthday Team today, but it would be better if it had the other Jose Reyes and the other Francisco Rodriguez. The ace starter is pretty decent.

C: Kevin Plawecki (2.8 WAR)
1B: J.T. Snow (11.0 WAR)
2B: Jack Brohamer (5.6 WAR)
3B: Kelly Gruber (16.4 WAR)
SS: David Howard (2.6 WAR)
LF: Danny Gardella (2.2 WAR)
CF: Dustin Ackley (8.1 WAR)
RF: Mark DeRosa (9.9 WAR)

SP: Pete Alexander (120.2 WAR)
SP: Preacher Roe (30.1 WAR)
SP: Rip Collins (16.2 WAR)
SP: Don Lee (7.5 WAR)
SP: Josh Towers (2.2 WAR)
RP: Hector Rondon (5.0 WAR)

Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame outfielder, probably the best OF born on February 26: Hiromitsu Kadota
Heisman Trophy winner: Vic Janowicz (-1.2 WAR)
Somehow pitched for Team USA in the 2006 WBC: Gary Majewski (-0.2 WAR)
Not that one: Francisco Rodriguez (0.3 WAR)
Not that one: Jose Reyes (-0.1 WAR)

Gary Majewski. Part of "The Trade".

Arenado reportedly nearing an extension with Colorado. Would override his current one year deal - 8/260m, opt-out after year 3.

I came to post about the Arenado contract. Obviously, I'm very excited and happy with it. Among his other virtues, Arenado is one of the most consistent and durable players in baseball, which makes this about as safe a bet as you can make.

Although I suppose this takes the Rox out of the Harper sweepstakes.

Cards to extend Mikolas as well. (4/68)

Gary Majewski. Part of "The Trade".
The Cincinnati Reds overhauled their rickety bullpen Thursday, getting Gary Majewski and Bill Bray in an eight-player trade that sent outfielder Austin Kearns and shortstop Felipe Lopez to the Washington Nationals.

The playoff-hopeful Reds also acquired shortstop Royce Clayton, infielder Brendan Harris and pitcher Daryl Thompson from the last-place Nationals.
I'm sure that this was infuriating at the time for a Reds fan, but in 2019 it's hard to believe that this deal would be notable enough to be referred to as simply "The Trade."

This offseason the Rangers have signed (among others) Hunter Pence, Asdrubal Cabrera, Ben Revere, Jason Hammel, Shelby Miller, Jesse Chavez, Jeff Mathis, Shawn Kelley, Jett Bandy, Matt Bush, Jeanmar Gomez, Zach McAllister, Danny Santana, and, today, Logan Forsythe.

Whatever the hell that market is, they’ve cornered it.
