Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 2-27-2019

Pittsburgh Press, February 27, 1919:

Ed Barrow has spoken, and it looks as if Babe Ruth is not to be granted his wish of becoming one of the Redsox’ regular outfielders and playing every day. The world’s champion’s manager says he plans to use Ruth solely on the slab and as a pinch hitter.

“Of one thing I am convinced,” said Barrow, “Ruth will play only one position. He will not be switched from first to left field and then back to the box. He will not be worked that way again…Right now it looks as if we needed him in the box. He is our best left-hander, and one of the best in the business. The American League’s most dangerous batters are left-handers. Then it is a good idea to have him there in the box.

It’s tough to blame Barrow for wanting to keep one of the best pitchers in the league on the mound. As it turned out, Ruth started 15 games as a pitcher in 1919 and 106 games as a left fielder.

I can imagine the conversation between Birthday Team manager Johnny Pesky and center fielder Denard Span:
"Listen, Denard, Matt Stairs is in right field. You're maybe going to want to shade a bit to your left."
"Okay, I can do that. Who's in left?"
"Johnny Wockenfuss. So maybe you're going to want to shade everywhere in the outfield."

I think b-ref underrates the Wonder Hamster's defense. That said, he wasn't exactly rangy.

Is there any place on the web (in English) to find current NPB rosters? Their official website still has 2018 rosters up on it and I'm not sure when they update.

Pete Smith-associated story. Was in LA for work during opening week of 1990 season. Saw Langston & Witt throw a combined no-no a the big A one night, then saw Smith throw 7 no-hit innings at Dodger stadium the next night in a game that he left trailing 1-0. So almost saw back2back no hitters, neither of which would be considered a no-no anymore.

So how does this work?

BRef has Hassey at 16.0 oWAR, 4.3 dWAR, but 14.7 WAR

I always liked Hassey - a catcher who could both hit and field cromulently

oWAR = rbat+rbaser+rdp+rpos+rrep
dWAR = rfield+rpos
WAR = rbat+rbaser+rdp+rpos+rfield+rrep

edit: Joey Votto, 2018

oWAR=20-3-2-7+20=28 oRAR (b-ref shows 27, which is because of rounding) 27-28 oRAR converts to 2.6 oWAR (approx. 10 runs/WAR)
dWAR = 9-7 = 2 dRAR, rounds to approx. 0 dWAR

WAR= 20-3-2+9-7+20 = 37 RAR (b-ref shows 36) which converts to Joey's 3.5 WAR
