Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-10-2021

Tulsa Daily World, March 10, 1921:

During a rookie practice in the forenoon “Babe” qualified as a sideline comedian, then spent an hour coaching lefthanded pitchers. In the afternoon he played first base, pitched a while, worked in center field, then went to bat, getting one home run and two singles. He brought the day to a close by relieving the bat boy of his burden.

I imagine the Babe would have spent a few innings selling beer if not for prohibition.

Not a good Birthday Team today. I know Viciedo was a particularly bad third baseman, but the options were fairly limited with this group.

C: Ben Davis (2.9 WAR)
1B: Lew Whistler (2.6 WAR)
2B: Gene DeMontreville (15.0 WAR)
3B: Dayan Viciedo (1.1 WAR)
SS: Donnie Murphy (-0.9 WAR)
LF: John Cangelosi (6.1 WAR)
CF: Tike Redman (1.0 WAR)
RF: John Briggs (24.0 WAR)

SP: Glenn Liebhardt I (5.6 WAR)
SP: Tom Hilgendorf (4.1 WAR)
SP: Art Herring (3.3 WAR)
SP: Wayne Twitchell (2.3 WAR)
SP: Mike Birkbeck (0.8 WAR)
RP: Mike Timlin (19.0 WAR)
RP: Steve Howe (10.3 WAR)

Fun names: Judge Nagle, Darcy Fast, Dad Lytle

John Cangelosi was an exceptionally fun player, listed at 5'8 but there's no way he was anywhere close to that. As a rookie centerfielder for the 1986 White Sox, he hit an amazing .235/.349/.299 with 50 steals. He also pitched in three blowouts and was pretty good at it, not allowing a single run.

It would be interesting to see a progression of stories from "Babe" to Babe.

"Tike" Redman isn't the little guy in this outfield.

Jim Leyland very briefly coached Cangelosi in 1985, acquired him with the Pirates in 1987, with the Marlins in 1997 (ring), and the Rockies in 1999.

Cangelosi went 501 for 2004 in his career, second behind Jim Spencer (4908 AB) for most career AB with a BA of exactly .250. Another tiny White Sox- Warren Newsom- is 8th.

Joey Votto tests positive for Covid-19. Out a minimum of 10 days under current MLB protocols. No word on symptoms yet.

Cangelosi kind of split time with Barry Bonds in 1987. Cangelosi had the higher OPS+ and walk rate (46 bbs in 233 PA is pretty good!). Barry Bonds was already becoming a WAR machine.

A guy has claimed to have lived in Veterans Stadium from 1979-81:

Once, Garvey went to sleep during a Phillies doubleheader in 1980. A rain delay caused the last game to stretch well into the early-morning hours. When Garvey awoke in the middle of the night, he went out to watch it in flip flops and a bathrobe with a warm cup of coffee.
“There were less than 200 people scattered around,” he said. “They didn’t want to know why I was there in a bathrobe and flip flops, they just wanted to know where I got a hot cup of coffee because the concession stands closed hours ago.”

I submitted this a couple of days ago but it got lost in the shuffle (?).

I assume he was one of Steve's kids.

John Cangelosi was an exceptionally fun player, listed at 5'8 but there's no way he was anywhere close to that.

Someone wrote an article in SI, expressing amazement that John Cangelosi had the power to hit a(n opposite field?) home run, and wanted to see if he could do it. Took BP in a major league park and ended up being satisfied he had roped "a double in any league" (as I recall it 30+ years later).
