Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-17-2021

Pittsburgh Press, March 17, 1921:

Indictments against seven Whitesox baseball players charged with “throwing” the 1919 world series to Cincinnati were dismissed today by Judge William Dever. The judge said he had no authority to dismiss the case against the eighth player—Chick Gandil—because Gandil had never appeared in court.
The indictments were nolled on motion of State’s Attorney Robert E. Crowe, who said that he would be unable to go to trial by May 2, the date set for the opening of the trial by Judge Dever.

Judge Dever refused to postpone the trial and set May 2 as the time for the trial to start. Crowe said that he realized that the state could not build up a case sufficiently strong to warrant trial by that time and asked that indictments be nolled.
The statute of limitations on the alleged conspiracy to throw the series will expire on April 1 and after that the players cannot be reindicted.

...and thus ended the criminal prosecution of the Black Sox.

A strong Birthday Team today. No superstars, but good players as far as the eye can see.

It's easy to forget how good Chris Davis was for a minute there - he led the majors in home runs twice in three years, but he's put up -6.3 WAR and earned $92 million since the end of the 2016 season. Yikes.

C: Oscar Stanage (4.0 WAR)
1B: Chris Davis (11.3 WAR)
2B: Fred Pfeffer (26.6 WAR)
3B: Bill Mueller (23.9 WAR)
SS: Jean Segura (21.8 WAR)
LF: Pete Reiser (24.4 WAR)
CF: Juan Lagares (12.4 WAR)
RF: Hank Sauer (25.2 WAR)

SP: Charlie Root (37.4 WAR)
SP: John Smiley (20.0 WAR)
SP: Scott Downs (10.8 WAR)
SP: Tim Lollar (5.8 WAR)
SP: Rynie Wolters (3.0 WAR)
RP: Rod Scurry (5.6 WAR)

Manager: Cito Gaston
Fun names: Bunny Pearce, Lyman Lamb, Daff Gammons
Shooting guard: Danny Ainge

Orioles front office circa January 2017: "We really need to build around guys who have low salary/WAR ratios."

The boxing story at the link was written by "Jim Jab." I suspect a pseudonym.

Whenever the link is from a Pittsburgh paper, it always seems either that Harry Greb just fought last weekend or will fight this weekend.

I'd never heard of Harry Greb. What a fighter. No wonder the old historians speak so highly of him.

Not sure where to ask this, but does anyone have any ideas for decent, free, fantasy projections? (I"d like to download and Excel sheet and play around with it a bit, but I don't know where to look).

Fangraphs has multiple projections. There's a button that says Export Data, too.

I feel dumb, of course Fangraphs has that, thank you NN.

here's a fun paragraph:
You might be thinking that there is no way the state of Tennessee could be more hospitable to a shithead reactionary ex-athlete than Boston, the capital city of shithead reactionary sports fans. Maybe you think that if a guy like Schilling can’t get along in Boston of all places, he’s probably not going to be able to find a more comfortable living situation without the benefit of a time machine. But have you considered this: Tennessee is currently home to Clay Travis, Jason Whitlock, and Ben Shapiro. Maybe they can all get together for Schilling’s housewarming party.

It's times like these where I actually miss YR, who would have taken this as a cue to launch into a 1500-word post about every aspect of Greb's life and career.

#9 He's a fascinating character. He gave Gene Tunney a terrible beating (in Tunney's only loss) and fought him 3 other times (one loss and two no decisions). Extra impressive since he really wasn't a light-heavyweight.
