Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-26-2020

L’Anse [Michigan] Sentinel, March 26, 1920:

Backers of the Wichita Falls Club in the Texas League have a scheme that may be followed by other clubs if it pans out right. Because of shortage of hotel accommodations in the Texas boom town, the Wichita Falls people plan to build a hotel for home and visiting ball players in connection with their grandstand. There will be kitchenettes, indoor beds and everything for Mrs. Ball Player if she wants to make her home with hubby at the ball park.

Indoor beds! Now you’re talking!

All snark aside, though, this is a pretty solid idea.

Not a great Birthday Team today. Kevin Seitzer was a solid big leaguer who was an All-Star reserve a couple of times, but it's not a great sign when he's the best player on your roster.

Also of note, Chris Codiroli from 1987-1990: 0-7, 9.22 ERA, 41 IP, 57 H, 44 R, 35 BB, 24 K, 45 ERA+. And one save.

C: Jett Bandy (0.1 WAR)
1B: Kevin Seitzer (28.9 WAR)
2B: Jose Vizcaino (7.0 WAR)
3B: Hernan Perez (2.8 WAR)
SS: Brendan Ryan (15.1 WAR)
LF: Jack McCarthy (10.5 WAR)
CF: Current Washington Nationals Michael Taylor (4.0 WAR)
RF: Frank Brower (7.3 WAR)

SP: Shane Reynolds (17.8 WAR)
SP/Manager: Mel Queen the Younger (6.1 WAR)
SP: Jimmy Lavender (5.4 WAR)
SP: Brad Hogg (4.0 WAR)
SP: Bill Zuber (1.2 WAR)
RP: Dan Morogiello (1.2 WAR)

-2.7 career WAR: Chris Codiroli (-2.7 WAR)
Announcer or strange medical condition?: Harry Kalas
Fun names: Rob Zastryzny, Mike Loynd

It’s finally March 26, the day we’ve been looking forward to all offseason. Before the games start, I guess I’ll get caught up on all the news I’ve ignored over the last five months.

I figured both of Seitzer's All Star selections would have been for the Royals, but it appears the second one was with the Brewers, based on the strength of a 109 OPS+. This sure looks like an every team gets one selection, given that no one else on Milwaukee played a full season on offense (as Seitzer was the only guy with more than 462 PA), the pitching was bland (Bones and Sparks were the only guys to qualify for the ERA title, and both had 107 ERA+), and he at least had a .323 average at the break.

Looks to me like that year (1994) they did have Dave Nilsson, Jody Reed and John Jaha play almost every game before the All-Star break. Reed and Jaha were not good at all, Nilsson was not as good as Seitzer and not as famous as Seitzer. The only possible choice among pitchers was Ricky Bones who was 7-7 with an ERA of 3.34. Closer Mike Fetters had a whopping 9 saves.

heh, Baseball-reference is giving us a 2020 season after all. They're running an OOTP simulation and putting up a 2020 line for active players. (Above their real numbers.) Yadier Molina went 0-3 with 2ks today. Rough start.

Willson Contreras says Yadi is a piker. 0-5, 4 K and a GIDP in a 14-3 Cubs win.

Labor peace imminent

MLB owners plan to ratify the deal in a noon call Friday, according to sources.

Players pushed to receive a full year of service time, which counts days toward free agency, arbitration and pension, even in the event of a canceled season. When MLB agreed to grant that, the path to a deal coming together was forged, according to sources.

If the year is cancelled, Betts may never play for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who traded for him this offseason.
