Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-26-2021

Pueblo Chieftain, March 26, 1921:

The Boston American league baseball club will be under a dual management this year, with the whole team acting as a supplemental board of strategy. Hughie Duffy, the manager in name, in a statement made at the spring camp at Hot Springs published [yesterday], said that he and Jimmy Burke, the coach, would share the management in fact. Burke was manager of the St. Louis Browns last year.

It almost sounds like a…college…of coaches.

Not a great Birthday Team today. Kevin Seitzer was a solid big leaguer who was an All-Star reserve a couple of times, but it's not a great sign when he's the best player on your roster.

Also of note, Chris Codiroli from 1987-1990: 0-7, 9.22 ERA, 41 IP, 57 H, 44 R, 35 BB, 24 K, 45 ERA+. And one save.

C: Jett Bandy (0.1 WAR)
1B: Kevin Seitzer (28.9 WAR)
2B: Jose Vizcaino (7.0 WAR)
3B: Hernan Perez (2.7 WAR)
SS: Brendan Ryan (15.1 WAR)
LF: Jack McCarthy (10.5 WAR)
CF: Michael A. Taylor (3.7 WAR)
RF: Frank Brower (7.3 WAR)

SP: Shane Reynolds (17.8 WAR)
SP/Manager: Mel Queen the Younger (6.1 WAR)
SP: Jimmy Lavender (5.4 WAR)
SP: Brad Hogg (4.0 WAR)
SP: Cristian Javier (1.3 WAR)
RP: Dan Morogiello (1.2 WAR)

-2.7 career WAR: Chris Codiroli (-2.7 WAR)
Announcer or strange medical condition?: Harry Kalas
Fun names: Rob Zastryzny, Mike Loynd

Was it one of those 3 IP in a 20-3 game dealies?

Someone recently threw a whole bunch of random games from the 1970s and 1980s up onto YouTube. I'm currently watching the White Sox and Yankees from 1981, with the all-animal pitching matchup of Steve Trout vs. Doug Bird.

Larry McMurtry RIP at 84. A 2002 interview reported, "He’s also shopping a script for “White Boy,” a true story about the only white player in the old Negro baseball league who happens to be mayor of a neighboring Texas town."

Both of whom were later Cubs.

Nope. But over Chris's last seven appearances of 1988, he had a 14.81 ERA and batters had a .431/.508/.627 line against him.

Lineup construction: In 1997, Dusty Baker insisted on putting Vizcaino 2nd in the order in front of Bonds. Literally, anyone except the catcher would have been better in that spot. Those were the days when it was thought that the key skill of a 2nd hitter was bunting.
