Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-6-2019

Pittsburgh Press, March 6, 1919:

[John] McGraw has received and is considering an invitation from J.P. Davies of the Curtiss Aeroplane Corporation, in which the Giants leader is urged to fly to Philadelphia, with his team mates for the opening game there on April 23. McGraw has indicated his desire to accept the invitation.

On one hand, that seems like an awfully short trip for an airplane. On the other hand, I have absolutely no idea what kind of range passenger planes would have had in 1919.

You know you have a good Birthday Team when Willie Stargell isn't even close to being your best player.

C: Francisco Cervelli (12.1 WAR)
1B: Scott Stahoviak (1.0 WAR)
2B/Manager: Cookie Rojas (9.3 WAR)
3B: Bill Sweeney (13.7 WAR)
SS: Clint Barmes (15.6 WAR)
LF: Willie Stargell (57.5 WAR)
CF: Leonys Martin (12.1 WAR)
RF: Marcus Thames (1.9 WAR)

SP: Lefty Grove (106.1 WAR)
SP: Jake Arrieta (24.5 WAR)
SP: Ted Abernathy (16.0 WAR)
SP: Eduardo Rodriguez (5.0 WAR)
SP: Terry Adams (4.1 WAR)
RP: Anthony Telford (2.5 WAR)

Not those ones: Roberto Duran, James Lofton
One-armed outfielder: Pete Gray
Writer: Ring Lardner

As an Expos fan, I didn't realize how valuable Anthony Telford was. 4 straight seasons giving between 78 and 96 innings in relief, with ERAs between 3.24 and 3.94, at the peak of sillyball (ERA+ of 119), that's quite something.

Noticed recently that BB-Ref has an extra data field for Pete Gray and Jim Abbott, "Fields: Left as well."

Maybe the offer was to fly them there from spring training? I can't find a quick location for Giants 1919 spring training site, but I know that around that period they were in Texas frequently.

According to "A Game of Inches" the Giants took the train instead.

I miss the days of Wine and Rojas

Cookie was my first favorite MLB player.

Cookie played exactly 880 games for both the Phillies and Royals. Are there any other long-career players who have the same number of games with multiple teams?

With at least 880 games per team, I find no other batters with exactly the same. The closest I found to exactly the same with 2 teams, minimum 880 games each team, is Chris Chambliss: 886 with Atlanta and 885 with the Yankees.
