Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-8-2021

Mount Vernon [Ohio] Democratic Banner, March 8, 1921:

Representative baseball men in six cities of Knox, Coshocton and Tuscarawas counties held a meeting in Mt. Vernon on Sunday afternoon and completed the organization of the Tri-County League to promote semi-pro ball this coming season.

The places represented were Newcomerstown, Coshocton, Utica, Bladensburg, Danville and Mt. Vernon.
...
Newcomerstown will have for its team coach “Cy” Young, the old veteran pitcher whose long career in the national game is a familiar story to most followers of the game.
...
Another notable in the promoters of the circuit is William Wagner of Danville, a brother of the well known “Honus” Wagner…

No big deal, just a semi-pro league in the middle of nowhere involving (at the time) the greatest pitcher who had ever lived and the brother of the greatest infielder who had ever lived.

Good position players on today's Birthday Team, but it's never a good sign when your second-best pitcher blew out his shoulder in his mid 20s.

The third best pitcher was never the same after 25. He may not have started writing if he'd still been a star.

SP: Jack Bentley (5.9 WAR)

Bentley received 1.7 of his 5.9 WAR in one season - just for his hitting. In 1923, in 94 PA, he put up a line of .427/.446/.573.

Posting in the correct dugout:

The Orioles have a knuckleballer in camp, Mickey Jannis.

Looking at his BB-ref page, that is a long road to the majors.
