Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-27-2021

Richmond [Kentucky] Daily Register, April 27, 1921:

George Smith, centerfielder of the Knoxville team of the Appalachian League, earned a place in baseball’s hall of fame Monday when he made an unassisted triple play against Jellico. With a man on first and second, a drive that had the earmarks of a sure hit was laced over second. Smiley came in fast, caught the drive, stepped on second bag and touched out the runner from first. This is believed here to be the first unassisted play which an outfielder ever made.

It wasn’t the first unassisted triple play by an outfielder - Walter Carlisle did it in the Pacific Coast League in 1911 - but it is a super-rare feat. It’s still never been done in the major leagues.

Today's Birthday Team features two Hall of Fame position players, a Cy Young Award winner at the top of the rotation, and one of the best young middle infielders in current-day baseball. They'll be just fine. They may move to California, but at least they'll be good.

Growing up I had a book that listed Paul Hines Paul Hines as having completed an unassisted triple play as an OF for Providence (NL) in 1878. But I guess that's now been disputed.

Joey Votto had the chance to make an unassisted triple play last week. He turned the first two unassisted, and it would have been a very un-Joey thing for him to make the third out by walking over to third base and touching the bag. But I would have been okay with it if he had, it's only happened 15 times in the history of the game.

I throw a curve he got the nerve to make a triple play
