Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-30-2021

Wilmington [Delaware] Evening Journal, April 30, 1921:

Joe Wood is the champion letter writer of the World Champion Indians. His little boy, Joe Jr., writes his daddy two or three letters daily while the Indians are traveling. Joe answers every one.

Jeez, no wonder the poor guy blew out his arm.

Seriously, though, this is really sweet. I don’t know whether Joe Jr. had any children when he was a pro ballplayer, but it would be neat if his kids did the same thing.

Today's Birthday Team will be a familiar situation for Phil Garner as a manager: A futile attempt to win with an undermanned and overmatched roster. As I'm sure you're aware, Jeff Reboulet isn't a first baseman, but someone has to stand over there and catch throws from the other infielders.

It probably doesn't really matter; Reboulet is fourth in career WAR among April 30 players. I have a soft spot for utilitydudes, but if Jeff Reboulet is clearly one of the best players on your team, that's no good.

C: Ken Retzer (1.4 WAR)
1B: Jeff Reboulet (10.0 WAR)
2B: Jose Peraza (0.7 WAR)
3B/Manager: Phil Garner (29.7 WAR)
SS: Randy Kutcher (1.8 WAR)
LF: Charley Jones (26.3 WAR)
CF: Dave Eggler (5.1 WAR)
RF: Chet Laabs (10.5 WAR)

SP: Jumbo Brown (4.9 WAR)
SP: Bob Hendley (1.7 WAR)
SP: Michael Kopech (0.7 WAR)
SP: Phil Klein (-0.4 WAR)
SP: Neal Baker (-0.5 WAR)
RP: Ryan O'Rourke (0.1 WAR)

Ball Boy: Ernie Tyler
Umpire: Jack Sheridan
Writer/Primate: Tracy Ringolsby

Having gone to a lot of Red Sox games in 88-90, I can say nobody seemed to enjoy being a major league ballplayer more than Randy Kutcher.

Ray Miller, 76 today, can maybe help the day's pitchers along.

Garner was drafted out of college at 22, split his age 23 season between Double and Triple A, then languished at Triple A for two more full seasons because the A's had Sal Bando at 3rd. Garner hit .330 at age 25 while Dick Green hit .213 at second for the big club. Garner played 160 games at second for the A's in 1975, after playing just five games at second in four seasons in the minors.

There's a current infielder in NPB who might be better than a couple of infielders on the birthday team. Ryo Watanabe has been with the Nippon Ham Fighters since 2014, and has been their regular second baseman for the past three seasons; he's played all four infield positions, though some sparingly. He has a career line of .261/.333/.374. Last season he hit .283, which may not look too spectacular, but it was actually seventh highest in the Pacific League (there were only four .300 hitters in the PL). So while he's hardly a great player, he's decent...
