Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-10-2021

Toledo News-Bee, May 10, 1921:

In the mind of [Mud Hens owner] Roger Bresnahan there has been lingering for several months the idea that he could be of greater use to the Toledo ball club…than by merely presidenting in the office or occupying a diamondside seat, during the field performances.
...
Bresnahan chased away the notion, for he felt the fans would think he was breaking in on [manager Bill] Clymer’s provinces, and he did not want that idea to get abroad.

But with the backstopping problem so important to the Mud hens at this time, a call upon Roger for temporary service behind the bat seems the easiest way to induce him to once more appear on the field in Toledo baseball garments.

Pretty handy to have one of the two or three greatest catchers in the history of the game (up until that point) as an emergency backup for your minor league team. 42-year-old Bresnahan, who hadn’t played pro baseball in three years, played five games for the ‘21 Mud Hens, hit .417, and re-retired.

Robby Thompson was a darn good player, but it doesn't inspire confidence that he's the leader in career WAR on today's Birthday Team and nobody is within a couple of big seasons of catching him. The two best players on the roster may well be the Japanese stars, Chiba and Fujimoto.

C: Salvador Perez (25.4 WAR)
1B: Klondike Douglass (3.0 WAR)
2B: Robby Thompson (33.8 WAR)
3B: Shigeru Chiba (0 WAR, in the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame)
SS: Chippy McGarr (1.4 WAR)
LF: Ken Berry (15.3 WAR)
CF: JaCoby Jones (1.2 WAR)
RF: 1960s-1970s Jim Hickman (13.0 WAR)

SP: Hideo Fujimoto (0 WAR, in the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame)
SP: Ted Blankenship (12.1 WAR)
SP: Russ Bauers (7.4 WAR)
SP: Pete Schourek (6.1 WAR)
SP: Bob Geary (0.8 WAR)
RP: Edward Mujica (3.8 WAR)

Manager/General Manager/League President: Ed Barrow
Owner: John McMullen
Broadcasters: Herb Carneal, Chris Berman
Statistician: Allan Roth
Whale: Joey Meyer (-0.1 WAR)

there was something weird about the 1970 season--complete fluke offensive seasons for Hickman, Wes Parker, and Cito Gaston

Indeed. Add Billy Grabarkewitz, Tommy Harper, Dick Dietz, Ray Fosse, Bernie Carbo, Tony Taylor, basically everyone. Felix Millan, Luis Aparicio, and Tony Taylor all hit over .300. Bert Campanaris hit 22 home runs. Harper hit 31...

I have no idea if this May 10 baby is famous: c. 2003, the Pirates had a decent outfield prospect named Tony Alvarez. Only had 64 at-bats in two seasons in the majors. Since leaving baseball, in his native Venezuela, he has: (1) made music videos under the name "El Potro Alvarez"; (2) served as Minister of Sport and Youth under the Maduro regime; and (3) married a former Miss World, a former Miss Universe runner-up, and a former Miss Venezuela International (?). That's three different women. So, maybe he can sing the national anthem or something?

The team is bad enough but it becomes utterly unwatchable if we have to put up with Chris Berman on the mike.

Impressive, although it appears to be a slightly declining trajectory? His sixth wife may be a state fair queen.

Tim Tebow was signed by my Jacksonville Jaguars-to play tight end.

Hah! I expected this to be a picture of Meyer in his NPB uniform, to which I was going to reply, "Funny guys, those Japanese."

Wow!! Is there nothing that man can't do poorly?

Maybe for 162 games, but Berman is on the mic for the greatest YouTube clip in MLB history: Cookie Rojas intentionally bumping umpire Charlie Williams.

His broadcast partner, Ray Knight (a blowhard as both a manager and broadcaster) keeps repeating "It just has to nick the line!" as Rojas goes nuts and Bobby Valentine (!) ineffectually attempts to hold him back. At the end, super slow motion replay shows that Williams made the correct call on Darryl Hamilton's drive down the left-field line. Comedy gold.

This the most recent dugout?

#11 I believe Dan mentioned there were things going on. Don't think he gave details (and I may be mis-remembering)

Sorry to hear that. I hope things go well OK for him and all involved.

Might as well comment on an old dugout:

The coolest thing about Shigeru Chiba was his nickname: The Formidable Buffalo. He spent his playing career with the Yomiuri Giants, but after retiring he managed the Pearls, who promptly changed their name to the Buffaloes, in honor of their manager.

Hideo Fujimoto had a fairly short career for a hall of famer, but he had quite the peak. In 1943 he posted a 0.73 ERA across 432 innings. Now, granted the league as a whole posted a .533 OPS, so in context that's not quite as mind-boggling as it looks. But it looks plenty mind-boggling.
